I just heard that Thelma Drake won't be attending the scheduled League of Women Voters debate tonight with Glenn Nye. I'm still trying to find out why, but possibly she simply doesn't want to face tough questions about her pathetic record in Congress?  See the Glenn Nye press release after the "flip" for some of the questions that Drake is ducking.

Drake Must Defend Her Record at Debate Tonight

Virginia Beach, VA--Now that the race for Congress is being called a "toss up" between challenger Glenn Nye and incumbent Thelma Drake, the pressure is on Drake to defend her record in Congress at tonight's final public debate, hosted by the League of Women Voters.

   * Will Drake explain her record of voting against the GI Bill, supported by Virginia Senators John Warner and Jim Webb, to enable returning veterans to afford to go to college and have access to good jobs?

   * Will Drake continue her campaign to privatize social security? Americans lost $2 trillion of their retirement savings over the last 15 months. Yet at the last debate, Drake was undeterred, saying, "I think it would've been a great idea if over the years I could've put a portion of my social security-double, remember, I was a realtor so I got to pay it all-into an account if I wanted to not if I didn't have to."

   * Will Drake continue to defend her votes to block stronger oversight of the banks, lenders and financial institutions that have given her campaign over a hundred thousand dollars while bankrupting our economy?

   * Will Drake finally admit that her public attacks on Glenn Nye and his brother's service conflicts like Iraq, Afghanistan and Macedonia were dishonest and cheap political games?

Voters in Hampton Roads have a lot of questions for Thelma Drake. They are frustrated with the political games in Washington who have gotten us into this financial crisis. They are ready for new leadership. Glenn Nye has a proven record of solving problems and getting the job done.

I'm sure there's a good reason. (Great Blue - 10/15/2008 1:48:34 PM)
Maybe there's a hurricane headed our way.

Maybe it wouldn't be respectful given our ongoing economic crisis.

Maybe Nancy Reagan broke her hip last week.

Maybe Dick Cheney's having heart palpitations.

Maybe she's had to suspend her campaign in order to find another scapegoat to demonize.

Maybe the oil companies showed up to drill here! drill now! at one of her 13 houses.

Maybe the GOP asked her to host a Presidential debate watching party with Jeff Frederick, and she had to launder the sheets.

By the way, what's the difference between the Exxon Valdez and Thelma Drake?  One was a disaster for a beautiful seaside community, and the other was an oil tanker spill.

Or maybe.... (Lowell - 10/15/2008 1:50:49 PM)
...she just realized her house really REALLY needed a good vacuuming! :)

Will this help Nye? (bamboo - 10/15/2008 2:36:46 PM)
Drake may be playing it safe here, but who will it help if she doesn't show up? Are these debates important to voter sentiment in the district? I somehow doubt it.

Call her office and ask! (NotBrianKirwin - 10/15/2008 4:01:35 PM)

U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake canceled a joint appearance Wednesday night with 2nd District challenger Glenn Nye.

Drake's 7 p.m. appearance at the Bayside Library, hosted by the League of Women Voters of South Hampton Roads, was canceled because of a family emergency that called Drake out of town, said her spokesman, Corry Bliss. Nye's campaign said Nye would still appear.
