The McBush Culture of Death

Conservatives without Conscience strike again:

The Bush administration this month is quietly cutting off birth control supplies to some of the world's poorest women in Africa.

Thus the paradox of a "pro-life" administration adopting a policy whose result will be tens of thousands of additional abortions each year - along with more women dying in childbirth.

The saga also spotlights a clear difference between Barack Obama and John McCain. Senator Obama supports U.N.-led efforts to promote family planning; Senator McCain stands with President Bush in opposing certain crucial efforts to help women reduce unwanted pregnancies in Africa and Asia.

Conservative prudishness kills women:

Everyday, over 1,400 women and adolescent girls die needlessly from giving birth and 40,000 more suffer injuries and disabilities that can last a lifetime. Complications of pregnancy are the leading cause of death for young women aged 15 to 19 in the developing world.

Jesus wept.

"Birth spacing" kills Mom and babies (Andrea Chamblee - 10/9/2008 8:42:27 PM)
The reason birth control is so important in Africa has to do with the poor medical care and high rate of malaria. Women can do okay with their first baby, but they lose a little blood. Iron-depletion and malnourishment get worse from nursing. Then Mom has no birth control and has another baby before 2 years go by. When she loses more blood from the second baby, she bleeds to death with relatively small losses of blood due to the malaria and malnourishment.  In cultures where fathers move on to one of their other wives and aren't involved in child care, the babies die, too.  Not exactly pro-life.
