How to Handle a Conservative

Robert Gibbs is my hero.

Instead of pointing out the logical flaws in a slur or attack you make an attack and slam it right back.  Don't talk about it, do it!

It helps that he came prepared with an answer. (Tiderion - 10/9/2008 1:20:36 AM)
If I were him I wouldn't have come up with that... because I do not watch Sean Hannity and I do not watch Fox News.

But yes, the tactic of redirection is a prized debating tool though it isn't a serious one. I hope at some point we'll simply debate issues rather than resort to half-baked punditry about nothing.

Agreed that it is nice to have that in your pocket (snolan - 10/9/2008 6:51:44 AM)
but this is more than redirection, Gibbs is directly addressing the silliness of the premise that simply by talking to someone you are endorsing all that they stand for and everything they have done.

Buddhism teaches us to address the Buddha within each individual when we are having trouble communicating, what that means is that even when someone has done something that really makes you angry, you can still communicate effectively by finding something in the person that you can talk to.  It's challenging, but it works miracles.

Gibbs is talking to an idiotic talking point by pointing out that not everyone gets to chose whom they associate with; sometimes you associate with people you don't like in order to serve a greater mission or keep peace at church or school.

Hannity doesn't so serious debating tools or issues (Josh - 10/9/2008 7:30:34 AM)
just sayin'

If you're going on the playing field make sure you're ready to play the right game.  This game is destroy your opponent, and bring a gun to the gunfight.

HANNITY IS NOT A 'CONSERVATIVE" (Peninsula Pete - 10/9/2008 10:10:46 AM)
Just because he says he is, doesn't make it so!  Sean Hannity is an ignorant, self important, egomaniac that has no idea what a "conservative" is or what  "conservative" believes.  The only Virginia equivalent would be self described "political consultant" Brian Kirwin, another republican self important, egomaniac who thinks he knows more than anyone else. You could never fit the two of them into one room.  The ego's would break the walls down.

I am a Virginia Conservative and in no way, shape or form ascribe any validity to the likes of Sean Hannity.

I will vote for Obama because McCain is a liar, scum-bag and has no plans for the future.  The only way to get the "conservatives" back into power, is to vote the likes of McCain and Bush out, lock, stock and barrel.  I actually like Obama.  I like his style, and the fact that he doesnt' let the nasty personal smear campaign being waged against him by McCain bother him.

The empty charge, "he's the most liberal senator in Washington" doesn't hold water with me anymore.  Everytime a Democrat runs, the Republicans run around like Chicken Little screaming that "he's the most liberal".  BS.  Enough.  Time to get the phony "conservatives" out and send them to the dumpster.

I didn't leave the Republican party, they left me, and the Democrats are looking better each day!

Please stop calling morons like Hannity "conservative", they aren't.

I have to call morons like Hannity (oldsoldier - 10/9/2008 10:22:29 AM)
"Conservative" because that's what they call themselves while trashing "Librals" though I'd rather call them Nazis.

"How to Handle a Conservative" (Teddy - 10/9/2008 10:35:39 AM)
is far too nice. The thing I got out of listening to the clip was that self-styled conservatives yell continuously and talk over their opponent in a bums rush way. As a woman, shorter, with a lighter voice, it is impossible to talk with them, as I have learned trying to have a discussion with my hard-right son. Speaking continuously under the clamor, completing your sentences, diverting the discussion, making a counter-attack (as you suggested), nothing works because nothing can be heard but the yammering of your "conservative" opponent. They also insist on The Last Word.

This is very much the style of historic domestic autocrats (usually the man of the house), and the way the meek little quiet wife used to handle the sonuvabitch was to go around him, do as she damned well pleased, and present him with a fait accompli he could not overturn. I begin to suspect that will be what happens with these autocrats of the airways, these dictators of the legislature, these tyrants of the Oval Office: work under the radar, trap them in their own web, and history will pass them by. Then dance on their grave.

Hannity is as much a "journalist" (JPTERP - 10/9/2008 10:40:12 AM)
as he is a heart surgeon.  The man has no journalistic training.

It still blows my mind that an organization headed by a political propagandist (Roger Ailes) could be viewed as anything but a party media organization.  For all the right wing hemming and hawing about "media" bias, Fox takes party message coordination to an entirely new level -- at least for this country.  Fox fits naturally into the "reporting" paradigm found in Communist China and the Soviet Union.
