Obama Campaign Exceeds its VA Voter Registration Goal

The Virginia Board of Elections today posted new numbers showing the GOP nominee facing an unusually challenging climate in the state, which George Bush won with 54 percent of the vote in 2004. In September, the board reports, 106,150 people registered to vote in the state; combined with deaths and people moving out of the state, the net increase for the month was 101,737.

That is more than double the number of new registrants in August, and it places Barack Obama's campaign ahead its goal of making sure 150,000 Virginians got added to the rolls in the months since the primaries ended (on top of the 142,000 Virginians who registered in the first five months of the year).

Closing in on 300k new voters (Josh - 10/5/2008 9:36:44 AM)
That's what it takes.  Fantastic news

There are those that are uncounted as well.... (Used2Bneutral - 10/5/2008 10:38:00 AM)
I have had several occaisions to go by the Board of Elections office at the Fairfax County Government Center in the last couple weeks.... there has almost always been a line for both registration and early voting.... the lines moved fast and they used the new optical scanners to register the votes.... several of the staff there mentioned that they have never seen so many walk-in registrations and the level of interest in this years election..... I believe these walk-ins across the state are not counted in those numbers and will also be a factor besides...

Yes, I also voted early.... because like a lot of the rest of you I will be very busy election day....

Don't forget 05-07 registrations (legacyofmarshall - 10/5/2008 11:52:50 AM)
Mainly - people who recently became old enough to register.

I for one was too young to vote in 2004, but voted D in 05, 06, and 07, and it's not just me, there are tens of thousands of college-age Democrats and Liberals in Virginia.

Kudos to all (hereinva - 10/5/2008 6:01:48 PM)
Including the two volunteers at today's Front Royal flea market. Two hardy souls w/ "Veterans for Obama" buttons had a little stand at the Front Royal flee market registering voters. Even at the most unexpected places..we are there.

Thank-you all.
