Goode Balk Caught on Air

This morning, Virgil Goode was a guest on 1070 WINA's Morning News With Rick And Jane.  Goode was asked to explain why he canceled his only scheduled televised debate with challenger Tom Perriello for next week (immediately before the Presidential debate to increase viewership.)

Goode jumped immediately on the defensive saying that it wasn't canceled and that it was never schedule in the first place. Lie #1.

A caller into his campaign office yesterday was told that he would be "at work" in Washington - Lie #2.  In fact, Virgil will not be debating Tom because he will be attending a campaign fundraiser.

When Goode suggests that the debate was "never agreed to" - Lie #3 - he omits the fact that the debate has indeed been planned since April!  Instead of owning up to his focus on fundraising and poorly organized campaign, he puts the blame squarely on the shoulders of his campaign manager - Tucker Watkins.  Talk about throwing your team under the bus.

Call Virgil Goode's campaign office at (540) 483-9030 and tell him that he can't duck debates.

Article from today's Danville R&B on Goode's shenanigans:

Congressman Virgil Goode's announcement Wednesday that he wouldn't be participating in next week's debate with Democratic challenger Tom Perriello came as a surprise to news executives who had already slotted the time for the televised showdown.

Goode, R-5th, has said that he never confirmed the Tuesday debate in Charlottesville, and will be unable to attend because he will be attending a fundraiser.

Since the debate was set to take place at NBC29, the station was set to produce it and WSET in Lynchburg was planning on airing the coverage.

"As far as we were concerned, yes," the debate was on, NBC29 news director Neal Bennett said Thursday.

The station had blocked out time on the schedule for the debate, he said.

Bennett said he had what he thought was a "firm verbal commitment" from Goode's campaign manager, Tucker Watkins.

"I don't know how it could have been interpreted in any other way," said Neal, who said other political debates he's covered have always been set up by campaign managers.

Bill Foy at WSET 13 said he received an e-mail Wednesday informing him that the debate was not going to happen.

Goode said in a telephone interview Wednesday that he is the only one who schedules his debates and never agreed to Tuesday night's event.

Goode also told WSLS 10 on Wednesday that he had already scheduled the fundraiser when the debate request was made.

"I want to do another debate," he told WSLS. "I can't do it when they want me to do it."

Perriello's campaign said it worked with the stations for months to set up the debate.

"It's just wrong that in a time of economic crisis, when voters most need to hear their representative's plans for getting the economy back on track, Congressman Goode would prioritize fundraising from lobbyists ahead of the voters' interests," Perriello said in a written statement.

Bennett said NBC29 is working with Goode to set up a new time for the debate, and hopes to have something confirmed by the end of the week.

Goodes not a duck- he's a chicken (jsalt - 10/3/2008 2:57:36 PM)
Goode's southern pride has been ruffled.  By bowing out of the race, he's taking the cowards route.  I thought he could handle a fight.  Obviously not.

Goode is afraid of the same media "filters" that Palin is (KFP - 10/3/2008 3:10:19 PM)
No doubt that Goode is feeling more pressure in this campaign than he ever has.  Tom is running a tireless campaign, that is focused on results and service.  Meanwhile Virgil is running scared and protecting his "good-ole-boy" persona in the face of his constituents who are now asking more questions of him than ever before.

I'm sure that he thinks that liberal media is out to get him, or suggest that they are all part of the "Obamamajority" that is trying to get rid of him.

By not taking part in this debate, he not only acting cowardly, looks totally disorganized, and is pointing the finger at whom ever is closest to him - - but he is deliberately prohibiting a large audience from hearing what both candidates have to say.

It's not just a cheep shot, it is a pulling the rug out from all those in this district that deserve a fair political process.

Same story from campaign office (ToKnow - 10/3/2008 4:19:30 PM)
"Mr. Goode never had this on his calendar, but there will be another debate later this month" was the reply from his campaign office when I just called.

Virgil Goode runs away from Tom Perriello (artd - 10/3/2008 11:24:30 PM)
In both previous debates in Charlottesville and Danville Tom Perriello ate Virgil's lunch.  He exposed Virgil for the intolerant bigot he is and demonstrated that Virgil has neither a clue nor a desire as to how to help the people of the 5th congressional district achieve at least some form of economic progress.  Now Virgil runs away from a televised debate with Perriello which would reach a majority of voters in the 5th and give them a chance to see what a loser they have for a congressman and how they can do much better.  The people of the 5th congressional district deserve a change from Virgil Goode.

WSET can send a videorecorder (Teddy - 10/4/2008 11:32:57 AM)
or something to whatever debate is going to be held, can't they? It would be a good coup to record somehow at least significant portions of the upcoming promised debate and then air it.... you did say they had saved a slot for the debate, so they will just have to shift the time, the same way media broadcasters do for a presidential address or press conference, which butts into ordinary scheduling. Or, they can record Perriello's answers to the debate questions that were going to be asked, and, if WSET feels it's necessary, splice in "answers" from Goode gleaned from campaign speeches, and run it as the "not-debate" half-hour. Anything to teach dear Virgil a little lesson, and get Perriello some face time.
