Friday night, Planned Parenthood of Southeast Virginia and its supporters gathered for its annual gala, with nary a protestor in sight.  This year's theme was Sex Prevention and the City, complete with giant cosmopolitan centerpieces with floating candles.

It was heartening to see many local politicians at the gala to offer their support to Planned Parenthood. Politicians spotted included Jody Wagner, Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor; Glenn Nye, Democratic candidate for Congress in the 2nd District; Congressman Bobby Scott from the 3rd District; and Virginia Delegate Bobby Mathieson.  Gone are the days when people had to hide their support for reproductive rights in Virginia.

The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the local Planned Parenthood's The Other 700 Club.  The goal of the group is to garner 700 donors of $1000 each to raise the $700,000 needed for the new Virginia Beach clinic.  It is a lofty goal, but anything that mocks Pat Robertson is a worthy cause in my book!

Interesting side note: guest Anne Rawley, a Blue Star Families for Obama member, veteran and former nurse shared stories with me about her experiences with "family planning" when she was in college studying to be a nurse in the 60's and in the early days of Planned Parenthood.  Apparently offices in secret locations and passwords were involved!  Ms. Rawley's training was actually quite progressive for the time.  Betty Friedan was on the reading list.  Now if only all medical practitioners were required to read The Feminine Mystique these days!

I read too many news and political blogs to try to keep track of them and link, but someone either today or yesterday had the best sound bite on Sarah Palin's position on Abortion rights and here it is:

Sarah and those who believe as she does, believe in the absolute, God-given right of any rapist to choose the mother of his children.

Wow! Talk about "Right to Choose"!
