I heard (Tiderion - 9/18/2008 11:24:57 AM)
some are taking offense to the "Blue Star Families for Obama" tagline. Anyone know more about it?

Tiderion - Yes, some have been upset.  Some Republicans.  But other organizations also use the term "blue star".  This is from the BSF4O website:

BSFO was started independently by a group of Army and Marine Corps spouses.  It is a grassroots group of military family members supporting Barack Obama for president.

Throughout this country, military family members are expressing support for Senator Obama, for the vision of America he projects, and for his attention to issues that concern them. Military families face many challenges unique to their lifestyle. On average a military family will move six to seven times over a service member's 20-year career. A military child will change schools once every three years. Each permanent change of station, or PCS, will decrease a military spouse's earnings by an average of $1,000 per year. This translates into a $10,000 to $12,000 wage gap between military and civilian wives, who also carry an unemployment rate that is up to four times the national average. The current cycle of deployments have taken their toll. Studies show increases in combat stress for family members as well as service members. Retention rates have declined at a steady and alarming rate for the past ten years.

Despite these challenges a majority of military personnel and their families are still satisfied with their lives. Over 70% would support their own child's decision to join the military. Patriotism and service for one's country remains the top reason people join and remain in the military. Military families need a president who goes beyond understanding their challenges: they need a president who shares their patriotic ideals, optimistic approach to service, and an advocate who can affect true change for the military community as a whole. BSFO believes that Barack Obama is the candidate who will fight for a robust, well-supported force without sacrificing his commitment to the nation's security.

More than 14,000 military personnel and veterans have donated to the Obama campaign during this election cycle - equivalent to an Army division. A recent study found that deployed military personnel donated 6 times more to the Obama campaign than to the McCain campaign, statistics which illustrate the broad support for Barack Obama among service members and military families, and reflect a broader shift by military voters away from the Republican Party.

Blue Star Families for Obama use the imagery of the blue star from The Blue Star Service Flag, which was designed in 1917 and is widely recognized as the symbol of a family who has a member in the military service. There are other organizations that claim "Blue Star" in their title. Blue Star Families for Obama is a partisan organization of military family members who are Pro-Military, Pro-Obama. It is in no way affiliated with Blue Star Mothers of America.

Blue Star (rhkennerly - 9/18/2008 5:50:38 PM)
Of course, Blue (for serving) and Gold (for KIA) Stars have been a part of military family life since 1917.  There are any number of blue star organizations, which the law authorizing the blue star does not address.  Generally, somebody related to someone serving.

And there have been Blue/Gold Star family campaigns for any number of candidates over the decades.

Controversy didn't really arise until some Blue Star Family organizations began collecting money as "military service organizations".  Their fear mpw is that too many Blue Star organizations dilutes their fundraising.

TraLa.  I spent 5 years as an AF Aid Society Officer and never saw any Blue Star outfit come up with any significant amount of money for military families in need.
