Linwood Holton made history in 1970 when he became the first Republican Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia since the Reconstruction era.

According to news reports in the last several hours, Holton will endorse and campaign for Democratic Presidential hopeful Barack Obama this coming Monday and Tuesday. He and his daughter, First Lady Ann Holton will reportedly visit Roanoke, Wise, Galax, Wytheville, Abington and Christiansburg.

A moderate himself, Holton lost his Republican backing during the forced segregation battle of the 1970's by voluntarily placing his children in the predominately African- American public school system of Richmond. As he saw the Republican Party become increasingly conservative, he began to endorse Democratic candidates for statewide office, including his son-in-law, future Governor Tim Kaine.

Good to Hear! (rockdove - 9/14/2008 10:14:46 AM)
It is good to hear about endorsements of Obama by moderates, including moderate Republicans.  I hope we see more and more of that happen in the next month and a half.  Obama has a lot of positive platforms to be interested in.  But I've also been wondering why in the world a LOT of moderate Republicans haven't become vocally angry at the nasty and lying tactics and extreme-right leanings of the McCain, now McCain-Palin campaign. Could this endorsement be a sign of things to come?  Hope so!
