Now this is what you call a surrogate:

Can't you just smell the backlash? (H/T Jed).

WOW, Ari Melber rocks! (TheGreenMiles - 9/12/2008 1:44:26 PM)
That was a command performance. Far and away the most effective Obama surrogate I've seen -- unfortunately, including Obama's VP (so far). I almost feel bad for Brad Blakeman -- someone get him some orange juice and a chocolate chip cookie because that dude got bloodied. I'd never heard of Ari Melber until today, but the Obama campaign should have him out in front whenever it can.

glad to see an Obama surrogate (thegools - 9/12/2008 2:48:35 PM)
with some backbone.

This is why the GOP wins.... (bladerunner - 9/12/2008 2:00:45 PM)
They don't give a f***k whether it's true or not, they just get it out there, and then the cows out of the barn, and the damage is done. There's nothing to  stop them from making this up so they keep doing it. And even if they're called on it, the base still votes them in because they believe in the cause so much it doesn't matter. The GOP knows how to Muddy the waters and confuse the voters of America into believing these lies. For them to say, "How do we know he wasn't talking about sex in kindergarten?" is playing stupid with us.

This can be overcome, however (aznew - 9/12/2008 2:47:19 PM)
I think it depends on how the narrative develops. While details don't break through to the majority voters, people generally seem to pick up on the overall collective attitude of the media narrative.

McCain's lipstick ad, followed by the kindergarten sex ed ad, really jumped the shark. I think the media, generally, has been smarting from the pounding they took at the RNC, and now they are not cutting McCain of Palin any slack.

There has been a very noticeable change the last 24-36 hours in Obama's favor on media coverage (not universal, mind you).

Oe thing is that Ike is blunting it a bit.

"Is it fair?" . . . (JPTERP - 9/12/2008 2:42:05 PM)
Not the right approach.

In politics the only question that people care about is "will it work?".

The way that I would approach this is:

What does this ad tell us about John McCain?

What does it say about a candidate when he lies again, and again, and again?  Any guesses how this guy might govern?

I hope you're right Aznew... (bladerunner - 9/12/2008 2:53:41 PM)
from what I hear from Chuck Todd, by Oct 15th most Americans will have made up their mind who they're going to be voting for. It is good to see "most" of the media is starting to get on their collective feet again.

Chuck Todd is probably right (aznew - 9/12/2008 3:23:47 PM)
The first debate may be decisive.

The dancing going on right now is all about positioning for that debate. Will McCain have to defend his indefensible ads with 80 million people watching?

Will Obama be able to say to him, right to his face, "ENOUGH!"

At least, I hope that the Obama campaign is focused on this event, because how Obama does in the debate, and how well his narrative takes hold in the days leading up to it and immediately afterwards, could not be more significant.

Hopefully, the Biden-Palin affair will be relegated to sideshow status, and we'll tune in just for the entertainment value.

Ari.... (Susan Mariner - 9/12/2008 7:43:25 PM)
It's so great to see him on TV.  I spoke to him for quite a while on Wednesday in Norfolk at Granby High School.  He was awesome.
