Moving Abroad: Links and Notes for Aspiring Expats

Well, it has happened. The Republicans suppressed enough votes and manipulated enough low information swing voters to claim another victory.

The Republicans retain control of the "unitary executive" so patiently assembled by the Bush/Cheney Administration during the past eight years. Warrantless wiretapping and data mining will continue to serve as the foundation of an Orwellian Total Surveillance state, and serious political opposition will be as pointless as it was in Orwell's fictional Oceania.

The major corporatist news media, except for the McClatchy newspaper chain, two token voices on the "Left" on MSNBC, and a handful of token op-ed writers at The New York Times and the Washington Post, will continue to serve reliably as the Republican Ministry of Truth. Only the blogosphere, easily monitored by the Orwellian Surveillance State, serves as a venue for an unfettered, unfiltered exchange of political opinion. "Let a thousand flowers bloom," so that they can be cut down when desired.

Perhaps it is time to live in a better place for a while. Below the break are a few links and comments about potential destinations for aspiring expats--including links on residency requirements for selected countries.
This list is not all-inclusive. Its purpose is to identify those countries for which it should be relatively easy for most Americans to obtain permanent residency status--in essence the expatriot equivalent of "green card" status. Some Americans will have special family ties that will enable them to obtain such status in certain countries, a status not available to American citizens without such ties to those countries.
