The Republican General Assembly is out of the Mainstream

The Republican-controlled Virginia General Assembly (GA) is not only misguided, it is out of the mainstream of what most voters want.  Evidence?  The GA want to eliminate safe and legal access to an abortion, despite the fact that 54% of Virginians consider themselves to be Pro-Choice. (Source: Survey USA)

HB1199- This bill, ironically, likely would cause more abortions, but that thought obviously never occurred to Bob Marshall

HB189- Would require all abortion clinics to comply with elaborate (and unnecessary) construction guidelines, forcing most to close.

In several bills, GA Republicans are trying to make life extremely difficult for immigrants working and living in Virginia.  This, despite the fact that 54% of Virginian's believe immigrants are harmless and just take jobs that Americans don't want. (Source: Survey USA)

HB487- Turns police officers into immigration officials.

HB1460- Again turns police officers into immigration officials.

And the bill I find most offensive is the Anti-Gay Constitutional Amendment, passed by the House and Senate, which bans all forms of gay partnerships. This, despite the fact that 59% of Virginia voters are in favor of civil unions. (Source: Daily Press).

HJ41- the infamous anti-gay partnership/civil union/marriage amendment.

SB414- "Prohibits both parties of a same-sex couple from being listed on a Virginia birth certificate following the adoption of a child in another jurisdiction." - Hat Tip to Russ Potts for killing it!

As I said, the Virginia GA is both wrong and out of the mainstream.  I guess that's what happens when our legislature falls under the sway of the most radical, right-wing conservative wing of the Republican Party.  Very unfortunate.
