Country First, Family a Distant Second

Doug McCain may be John McCain's oldest son, but he appears to have sprung fully formed from the earth. The Virginian-Pilot's fawning article about McCain's oldest child mentions the five years John McCain spent as a P.O.W. What it doesn't mention is Doug's mother and her treatment as a doormat for McCain's ambition. To read the Pilot article (or was it a Republican press release?), the three eldest McCain children didn't have a mother.

Let's forget that Carol McCain waited for her man to return in the timeless tradition of the Navy wife. Let's forget that she sustained horrible injuries in a car accident. Let's forget that when McCain came home to his handicapped wife, he skedaddled.

The Republican National Convention showed a video before McCain's speech last night-the timeworn, misty-eyed biography of the true American hero. When they got to the story of McCain meeting his current trophy wife Cindy at a Waikiki Beach cocktail party, "it was love at first sight." "She met a dashing Navy Captain," the film gushed. There was a wry joke about John and Cindy lying to each other about their ages. That's soooo cute (and so prophetic of the "straight talk" to come). But did he mention he was married at the time? The video didn't.

Family values? Integrity? Loyalty? When it comes to John McCain, it's do as I say, not as I do.
