Virgil Goode's plans for September 11th

The invitation asks: "Will you join us on September 11th."

Virgil recently sent out this request not in an effort to pay tribute to our Nation's greatest tragedies but instead to increase his reelection campaign contributions from the beltway business-as-usual power brokers, corporate lobbyists, and PACs.
Exploiting his seat on the Appropriations Committee, he is hosting a fundraiser just down the street from the Capitol Building where the going rates are $500 per person, $1,000 for PACS, and $2,500 for PAC sponsors.

We hope you will help Virgil with his re-election campaign.  Will you join us on Sept. 11th?
?
You are cordially invited to a luncheon honoring

Congressman Virgil H. Goode, Jr. (VA-05)
Committee on Appropriations

Thursday, September 11

Washington, DC

The Danville News reported:

On September 11, a major Washington, D.C. government affairs and lobbying firm will hold a fundraiser for Congressman Virgil Goode. The fundraiser will be held less than five miles away from where a plane, hijacked by terrorists, crashed into the Pentagon seven years earlier.

The Perriello campaign had this to say about Goode's fundraiser on September 11th:

A powerful group of Washington lobbyists is hosting a "pay-to-play" fundraiser for Rep. Virgil Goode on the anniversary of 9/11. The invitation clearly indicates his position on the Appropriations Committee and lists giving levels at $500 for individuals, $1,000 for PACs, and $2,500 for PAC sponsors. The event is to occur a stone's throw away from the Capitol Building, suggesting the lobbying power in Washington politics.

"This is just another example of how Virgil Goode has been bought and paid for by the special interests in Washington. Voters of the fifth district should be offended that he would engage in such blatant inside-the-Beltway power-brokering on the anniversary of 9/11, no less," said Jessica Barba, communications director for the Perriello campaign. "We demand that Congressman Goode cancel this event. If he refuses, it will send a strong signal to voters that he is more interested in representing special interests over Southside."

After the recent FEC filings this summer, Virgil Goode posted over $197,000 in PAC contributions and that number will no doubt increase significantly over the next several weeks.

Unlike Virgil Goode who is beholden to beltway corporate special interests, Tom Perriello has refused all donations from corporate PACs and lobbyists.

Goode has consistently postured himself as the independent voice in Congress who fights relentlessly for southside Virginia.  Instead, he is sending a strong message by holding this fundraiser on September 11th that he will use any opportunity to fight for more Washington corporate interests in Washington.

I applaud Tom Perriello for coming out so strongly against Goode on this event.

Virgil's true colors (Jim White - 9/7/2008 7:22:05 AM)
are exposed by this event, as if there were any doubt. The man has no ethics at all. As a veteran, I am appalled by Goode's behavior. Let's just hope more people begin to see the real Virgil Goode, not as a lone voice fighting for the 5th CD, but a career politician with only his corporate and PAC's agenda at heart.

I Think.... (Flipper - 9/7/2008 9:02:37 AM)
attacking Goode over ties to lobbyists will only gain so much traction in this district.

And I don't think attacking Goode over owning stock in oil companies is much of a strategy either. For most American's who own retirment funds, it is difficult to own mututal funds that do not contain big oil stocks.

Tom needs to focus his message more - concentrate on economic issues, energy independence, education, etc.  Attack Goode over his failure to take care of the middle class in his district.

Let voters know that he feels their pain - lay out a plan for economic development, education reform, etc.

Taking out an incumbent in this district is going to be tough, regardless of how much mony you raise.  You have to give voters more reasons to vote for you to take out an incumbent.

9/11 flight attendant can't believe it! (911flightattendant - 9/9/2008 3:16:15 AM)

9/11 was one of the most pivotal days in world history.

I was a flight attendant working the DC - Albany, New York flight, passing the second plane that hit the World Trade Center. I, especially as a REPUBLICAN, am appalled that Virgil Goode is having a "pay to play" fundraiser PARTY on 9/11.

I realize people must move on with their lives, but for a Congressman in DC where another plane killed numerous people and almost destroyed our Pentagon to have a "party" on 9/11 is beyond my comprehension.

On 9/11, as Tom Perriello is gathering desperately needed supplies for our courageous troops in a war that Virgil voted for, Goode is having a fundraising party.

Remember that when you go to vote!

Whether Goode cancels his party or not, every time I see a GOODE sign or hear his name, I will remember his selfishness and greed to raise money and PARTY on such a sacred day of mourning in America!

September 11 will always be remembered and honored in my house.

Virgil I hope you have fun at your PARTY.

You have shamed our Republican Party.

Go to another party, OH, wait, you ALREADY HAVE!!  They didn't want you either!  Now I see why...

Retire or resign.

You are not worthy of being our Congressman.
