My Problem With Sara Palin

I've been hearing all the media hype that Sara Palin is inexperienced (slight yawn), has a pregnant 17 year old (yeah, and?), and is just not ready to be the US President if McCain were to die in office.  You know, I would just say to all these arguments, if that's all you got, give it up already!  Let's talk issues and let me tell you my problems with Sara Palin.

Experience?  Well, honestly, the most experienced president we ever had was Richard Nixon.  Need I say more?  Okay, the fact that Palin only just got a passport slightly weirds me out because my question to her is, is Alaska that interesting that you have no desire to travel?  Yeah, I know you have kids, but, what about before your marriage and children?

I am irritated that McCain attacks Obama for lack of experience even though his resume does exceed Palin's.  If you would like to see a comparison of the two resumes, please let me know and I will send you my study, which is thoroughly backed up and referenced.  It irritates me that McCain is so hypocritical and the Republicans are now running Palin as the "agent of change" who is "new and fresh..."  Wow, sound familiar?  I guess the Republicans have nothing new and have to recycle Obama's taglines during the primary.

About her 17 year old daughter who is pregnant...  What is the big deal anyway?  Teen pregnancy has tripled in the past 8 years and why should Palin's daughter be any exception?  Is Palin a bad person?  No!!!  Is her daughter a bad person?  No!!!  Now, I have seen the baby's father and heard him talk and, well, her daughter does need some advice on her choice of men...  Yikes!

I'm frankly annoyed that the media forgets the most important issue related to this.  Palin is vehemently pro-life, has condemned any talk of men using condoms or any type of contraception discussion, etc.  She is the biggest proponent of abstinence-only education.  Well, maybe her daughter could have used some education on contraception and her partner could have used a lesson on what a condom is and what its purpose is.

What bothers me even more is that the Republicans are touting Palin as the victim of sexism.  Are they kidding me?  The Republicans who ripped apart Hillary Clinton (and, believe me, I am no fan of Hillary Clinton), Geraldine Ferraro, and any female Democrat, has the nerve now to turn around and whine about sexism?  They can do better than that, can't they?

I desperately would love to see a woman become President of the United States, but I want the right woman.  I don't want a woman leader who believes that the disparity in incomes between men and women is not a problem, who believes that women who get abortions are criminals and that abortion should be illegal, and that contraception is wrong to use outside of marriage.  I don't want a woman leader who doesn't believe that every mother and child should have complete health care coverage.

I also don't want a woman who was vetted and recommended by the ultra-Conservative, Christian group led by James Dobson, Tony Perkins, and Tim Lahaye (notice no women are in this elite group).  This group has all but condemned single mothers.  Goodness, we women can't do anything right.  If we get an abortion, we are criminals, but if we have the child, we are immoral bitches who are "drain on society."  Maybe all unwed women should be rounded up and deported or forced to wear a bourka over our faces so that we don't run the risk of having sex outside marriage and becoming pregnant.  Wait a minute - don't they do something like that in Saudi Arabia?

Okay, I confess, I am a bit conservative.  I would love a world in which sex could always be within the bounds of commitment and where abortion simply would never happen because every woman is in the perfect place in their lives to deliver an unplanned child.  However, I have seen the reality.  Ever since Bush enforced the abstinence-only program in the schools, the rate of teen pregnancy has shot up.  By the way, that means that the rate of sex has not dropped...  And, let's be yet more painfully realistic, accidents happen and pregnancy can happen among teens and even children, much as we hate to see this.  Contraception works, but only when this same group is educated and well-informed on using it.

My last problem with Palin has actually nothing to do with Palin - it has to do with McCain!  Frankly, I think he's a dirty, old man!  Yup, I'll say it boldly.  This guy has a fetish with former beauty queens!  His first wife was a fashion model and former beauty queen who waited for him as he was a POW in Vietnam.  In the meantime, she had an accident, which slightly disfigured her face.

Of course, she was no longer good enough for the cool jock, John McCain, and so he did what any normal guy would do - he started an affair with another fashion model who was 20 years younger than himself: Cindy McCain.  He then officially divorced his first wife and married Cindy.

What does this have to do with Sara Palin?  Am I intimating that he only chose her because he wants to have an affair with her?  Nah, maybe he would like to have an affair with her because, well, she's attractive, let's be honest.  However, I don't think that's really the reason.

However, there's another reason that bothers me more.  McCain could have chosen from a vista of professional and highly qualified Republican women who are also considered "mavericks" within their party: Olympia Snow (Maine), Kay Bailey Hutchison (Texas).  So, why did he choose the least qualified?  Considering his record, I have to wonder if her looks did have something to do with this...

Anyway, that's my whole argument about Sara Palin.  I want to see a woman leader, but not this woman as leader just as I did not support Hillary Clinton, Margaret Thatcher, etc.  By the way, under Margaret Thatcher, the situation for women/mothers in England became extremely difficult, but I can give you all those details later if you would like.

Finally, let's talk about the fact that she's under investigation.  Let's talk about the lies surrounding her: she did raise taxes, supported pork barrel projects in her state, and I have plenty more, which I don't have time now to write out.

So, what will be outcome?  God only knows and I don't think she's planning on telling us in advance!

People keep saying this, but... (tx2vadem - 9/4/2008 3:01:47 PM)
Olympia Snowe and Kay Bailey Hutchison (though she does have a more pro-life record than most) could not have been the choice for the same reason that Lieberman and Ridge weren't the choice.  They do not adhere to the orthodox view on abortion that the Republican Party has.  It shows us that McCain holds the leadership position of his party in name only, the real power resides elsewhere.

They also bumped Hutchison from the prime-time line up last night.  I wonder what prompted that.
