Excessive Patriotism?

Am I the only one who is discomfited by the display of jingoism at the Republican convention? Patriotism is one thing; excessive nationalism coupled with militarism is another.  Are we on the road to becoming a modern-day Sparta?  Surely, most patriots are not scoundrels, but it is also true that patriotism can be the last refuge of scoundrels.

It would be refreshing if the Dems didn't try to ape the Republicans on this front, but instead mounted (1) an aggressive attack on the perils of excessive nationalism/militarism, and (2) an articulate defense of collective security and international cooperation.  Take'em on; head on!

I found it to be rather campy (tx2vadem - 9/3/2008 6:40:24 PM)
I love the big LCD screen with the flag waving constantly.  And the Texas Delegation just added to that.  And to top it off the singing along to Journey.

OH! And I forgot (tx2vadem - 9/3/2008 8:42:33 PM)
there is that glossy black (lacquer like) stage with neon blue lit steps.  It is either missing a pole or Las Vegas Show or Cher or Celine Dion.  All they need is a fog generator and a set of laser lights and it would be complete.
