Washington Post Endorses Kaine's Transportation Plan

The Washington Post weighs in on the side of Governor Kaine in Virginia's ongoing debate over transportation.  The key paragraph:

GOV. TIMOTHY M. Kaine's proposal to generate billions of dollars of additional money to fix what ails Virginia's road and rail system is a serious, credible plan that elevates transportation to the top of the state's agenda for the first time in 20 years. It puts much of the funding burden where it belongs -- on drivers and commuters. Predictably, Mr. Kaine's program has come under attack from anti-tax ideologues, developers and auto dealers, all of whom think it overreaches. In truth, the governor's plan can fairly be seen as erring on the side of caution.

The Post also points out that "Developers, who hate the proposal to tie land-use plans to transportation, are up in arms," as are "Republican anti-taxers in the House of Delegates, who would spend current surplus revenue for road projects but provide no durable funding stream into the future."  If anything, the Post points out, Virginia will need even MORE money to fund transportation in coming years.  And, in the Post's view, "Mr. Kaine has taken on powerful interests, but his ideas are well reasoned and an excellent starting point for an important debate in Richmond."  I agree.

Discuss. :)
