Pelosi Brings a Knife to a Nuclear War

Well, wasn't that special???

Speaker Pelosi gave the first major messaging speech of the convention just now, and if it's any indication of what we can expect, November 4 could be a loooong night.

Here's Pelosi's all purpose attack:

John McCain is Wrong

John McCain is wrong?  Seriously?  John McCain is Wrong!!!  This is the guy who has spent every waking moment trying to prove to America that Obama is the Anti-Christ.

The beginnings of a gut punch narrative can be found below:
Team Obama meanwhile has launched two fairly strong lines of attack:  McCain is Out of Touch (how many houses do you have?), and "More of the Same".

I think right there we have a good explanation of why Democrats lose elections.

Pelosi's speech was essentially 2 lists:

1.  Things the Democratic Congress has done
* Implementing the recommendations of 9/11 Commission
* Addressing Katrina and Rita Aid
* Tax Rebates
* Housing Industry Reform
* First increase in Min wage in 10 years
* First increase in fuel efficiency in 30 years
* First expansion of the GI bill in 64 years
* VA funding increases

and

2.  Issues on which Obama was right and McCain was wrong:
* Health Care and Children's Health Care
* Education
* Strong Middle Class
* High paying green collar jobs
* Responsible end to the war in Iraq

While all of the Congressional accomplishments are just fantastic, and while John McCain has been on the wrong side of basically all of them, this is no way to fight against a party so desperate it is willing to go nuclear.

First of all, if America actually understood all of those wonderful Congressional accomplishments, Congress wouldn't have a 73% disapproval rating. In order to get approval, you have to show that Republicans who opposed these great accomplishments aren't just wrong, they have serious character flaws.  For example:

Republicans who oppose:  Implementing the recommendations of 9/11 Commission, are too greedy to fight terrorism.

Republicans who oppose: Addressing Katrina and Rita Aid, prove that conservative philosophy, in practice, kills Americans and destroys America.

Republicans who opposed Tax Rebates, and an increased minimum wage want you and your family  homeless and starving.

Republicans who opposed fuel efficiency increases want to leave the American economy weak and at the mercy of those who don't like us and don't share our values.

We all know that this should be a strongly Democratic year, and it likely will be, but Obama has allowed John McCain free reign for the past 3 weeks to drive up negative perceptions about Obama.  McCain hasn't improved his own numbers, but he's really hit Obama hard.

We don't need another Bush maverick in the White House who will go his own way and look out for the rich and the powerful.

We don't need another Bush maverick going his own way on the national stage, embroiling us in wars we don't need to fight.

We don't need another Bush maverick.

If you've got a sharper attack, use it.  If I'm a McCain staffer watching Pelosi's Milquetoast attack, I'm laughing and cheering another moment when Democrats have squandered the opportunity to drive up my negatives.

Something tells me you're not (Lowell - 8/25/2008 9:47:19 PM)
going to like Mark Warner's speech either. His preview today was all about bipartisanship and how John McCain's an honorable man but wrong.

Dems need to go to kneecapping school (Josh - 8/25/2008 9:49:01 PM)
We've got to fight.

Agreed. (Lowell - 8/25/2008 9:52:21 PM)
I'm still not feeling the sense of extreme urgency after 8 years of disastrous Republican (mis)rule.

Chris Bowers (Lowell - 8/25/2008 9:59:38 PM)
agrees:

...    * other than Pelosi's than less convincing "John McCain is wrong" call and response, do we have any plans to attack John McCain during this convention? I haven't heard any of it so far. It would be a massive waste of an opportunity if we don't really open up on him in this election. For example, the Carter video could have shown Bush and McCain sharing cake when Hurricane Katrina struck. But we decided to take a pass.

   * Second, with the exception of Jesse Jackson Jr., the Democratic Party once again is doing a remarkable job of bringing together a dizzying array of people of all colors, backgrounds, and religions while still somehow managing to be boring. I mean, you really have to work hard to bring together this many different cultures and peoples and still be boring. It doesn't happen all by itself.

So, I'm not feeling it yet. I will update later tonight...

Yup (Ron1 - 8/26/2008 12:34:26 AM)
Hopefully Hillary and Bill Clinton and Joe Biden will take on the task with the proper energy.

Otherwise, the rest of the speakers frankly are a bit milquetoast (boy, I wish we had a feisty General that we could deploy to take down John McCain a few pegs ... oh, wait) and probably unlikely to do what needs to be done.

Man, Ted Kennedy does not (Lowell - 8/25/2008 9:48:08 PM)
look or sound good at all... :(

Sadly (Alicia - 8/25/2008 9:59:46 PM)
I agree.
But he was so strong in his attempt - and I thought he did great.

Yeah, but it's really bumming me out (Lowell - 8/25/2008 10:00:48 PM)
to see him like this.

We need more of his fire (Alicia - 8/25/2008 10:05:14 PM)
and seeing him tonight kind of makes you miss him at the same time.

But is it me - or is Kennedy the only one Raising his Voice and speaking out on Iraq?

Come on -- this party needs to get fired up!!!

I dunno, maybe I'm being too critical but... (Lowell - 8/25/2008 10:01:27 PM)
...right now I just kinda feel like zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Or maybe I feel like I've been watching (Lowell - 8/25/2008 10:04:18 PM)
this campaign closely for the last 2 years. Actually, come to think of it, I have! :)

Light bulb just went off... (Lowell - 8/25/2008 10:24:48 PM)
...that this convention is NOT aimed at people like me (or most people who read or comment on this blog).  Duh.

Right (Ron1 - 8/26/2008 12:31:08 AM)
I came to the same conclusion. As much as I liked her speech, I've heard Michelle say all those things before -- it's a testament to how messed up our establishment media culture is that a few misspoken, innocuous remarks got ripped all out of context and amplified way out of proportion to tar and feather her as someone she so obviously isn't.

To the extent it was necssary, frankly Michelle's speech was aimed at the blowed dried poodles of cable television "news" -- they are the ones she had to convince so that they can compare and contrast her with Cindy McCain (ahem) and have them pontificate on how much more in touch she is with us 'regular 'Muricans' than Cindy is. That's sadly what tonight was about.

I continue to be underwhelmed by our party's ability to play this game, but am hoping the decency of Michelle Obama will win the night regardless.

Yes! Finally, someone speaks about global warming (Lowell - 8/25/2008 10:14:08 PM)
...and it's a Republican (albeit a sane, moderate one)!

I liked Leach's speech (Ron1 - 8/26/2008 12:32:29 AM)
Seeing Paul Begala needlessly trash Jim Leach afterwards was rather revolting.

Leach gave an intellectual speech, which obviously didn't go over so well with the amped up crowd after Teddy's emotional presentation.

Excellent video about Michelle Obama! (Lowell - 8/25/2008 10:32:07 PM)
I love the part about how Obama finally "made his move" by offering to buy her ice cream.  Also, the former colleagues talking about her is very effective.

Great speeches by Michelle Obama (Lowell - 8/25/2008 11:04:04 PM)
and her brother.  Definitely the highlights of the night!

damn straight! (sammi fredenburg - 8/26/2008 3:03:39 AM)
great blog points here josh.

concerning opening night, other than the great speech by kennedy, i had trouble keeping focus on the recap of the evening.  i can listen to Blitzer and work here, but i hope you in the room had stronger interest.  and are folks really as rabid about Billary as the press is making them out to be?  how very sad.

Could not agree more (aznew - 8/26/2008 9:44:06 AM)
As I said in a comment to another thread, I think it is up to the Clintons and Biden to make the case against another 4 years of GOP rule. They are uniquely positioned to so more effectively than anyone else in America.
