Have You Ever Forgotten How Many Houses You Own?

Must be that "mental recession" John McCain is in.  Or maybe he believes that $4.9 million a year and 7 houses makes you middle class?  Is this guy completely out of touch in our "nation of whiners" or what?

McCain Spin (Bryan Scrafford - 8/22/2008 7:41:49 AM)
One of the funniest parts of the whole thing is how the McCain camp said that Obama shouldn't get into this discussion because he made $4 million last year. What McCain apparently doesn't realize is that according to the statement he recently made, Obama wouldn't even be considered rich.

Perhaps it's time to revisit (Lowell - 8/22/2008 7:46:44 AM)
the Keating Five scandal?

11:15AM: Outside McCain's luxury Arlington condo, Virginians respond to 'houses' controversy

McCain lives at 'most enviable address in Virginia,' while middle-class families face economic downturn

ARLINGTON - Virginia middle-class families and elected officials will hold a press conference Friday morning outside of Sen. John McCain's luxury Crystal City condominium, in response to the growing controversy over McCain losing track of how many houses he owns.

Del. David Englin (D-Alexandria) and Arlington County Democratic Chair Peter Rousselot will join middle-class families at 11:15 A.M. on Friday, outside of McCain's riverside condominium at 1300 Crystal Drive in Arlington. Local real estate agents describe McCain's Crystal City home as "the most enviable address in Virginia."

Englin, Rousselot and others will ask how McCain can represent middle-class families who are struggling with the rising cost of living, soaring gas prices, and the foreclosure crisis.

On Wednesday, when asked by Politico how many homes he owns, McCain responded: "I think -- I'll have my staff get to you. It's condominiums where -- I'll have them get to you." McCain's out-of-touch answer erupted into a national controversy Thursday, as the Republican presidential candidate tried to explain away losing track of his seven homes, while many Americans are struggling to hold on to their one home.

I hate it when that happens. (Great Blue - 8/22/2008 8:44:56 AM)
Let me check with my accountant.  Oh, wait a minute, I don't have an accountant.  Well, let me check with my spouse.  How many houses do we have, honey?  One?  Thanks.

Barack Obama said last night that McCain's staff answered the how many houses question, "4," then later said "7," but it may be 8.  Olbermann said there were 6 houses on one property, which would make it more like 12 or 13.  You can see why McCain didn't want to answer this question.

The thing that amazes me is... (ericy - 8/22/2008 10:45:30 AM)

That McCain of all people is trying to paint Obama as an elitist.  What the hell???

McCain - the man who has a wife with a private jet.

McCain - the man who wears 500$ Ferragamo shoes (I had never heard of this brand, but my fiancee used to work in the shoe department of Bloomingdales, and she knew exactly what they were).  How many of you have ever spent that much on a single pair of shoes?

It goes on and on.  I think the the idea that elitism might be an effective attack came up because they used it with success against Kerry, and they are throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks.  But the old saying is that those who live in glass mansions ought not throw stones...

I found (Tiderion - 8/22/2008 11:06:24 AM)
in talking to my fiance that women know a lot more about shoes than most men will ever know. I understand there are plenty of expensive shoes that women are willing to buy (manolo blahnik? or something) but I rarely find a man willing to buy expensive shoes, at least shoes over $150. I understand that it's better in the long run to buy a pricier pair of shoes of better quality and comfort than shoes from Target. But McCain and his wife seem to be looking for ways to waste money. That point about their lifestyle says a lot about how he might govern and advice she might give him.

If I were rich ($5 million a year plus apparently), I think I might have three homes at most. If you are a politician in Congress, you kind of have to have a place in DC to live so I can understand that.

The best part of the video up top is the last few statements.

Well you can be that wealthy that you don't know what you have in spite of the fact that other people are so poor they don't have anything...
Punch to the face.

Quality is one thing... (ericy - 8/22/2008 11:32:11 AM)

Up to a point though.  At a certain level you are just paying a lot more for a designer label on the thing, and those Ferragamos are clearly up in that territory.

Exactly. (Tiderion - 8/22/2008 1:34:47 PM)
I'm sure there are plenty of people who prize a designer label. Most live in Hollywood. Hahaha.

Rovian Politics (Ron1 - 8/22/2008 11:58:29 AM)
Attack where you are weakest and vulnerable.

To whit:

John McCain is an out-of-touch, holier-than-thou politician who craves the limelight and the adoration of the establishment press while peddling fiscal and economic policies that would benefit only the economic elites of this country. He has married into huge sums of money and shows that he has no idea of what economic conditions are like for the large majority of the country that he wishes to lead.

[Enter Rovian spin cycle]

Message:

Barack Obama is a celebrity elitist that is different than you and me and doesn't understand the economic conditions of the country he condescends to. He is vapid and lightweight.

On every single issue, it's clear that the Rovian mudslingers are in charge. That's the real John McCain, my friends.
