Tim Kaine on John Edwards: "Very, very disappointed"

From this morning's Richmond Times Dispatch, here's Tim Kaine's reaction to the revelations about John Edwards:

"Very, very disappointed . . . and surprised," Kaine told the Richmond Times-Dispatch in an interview during a break at the Southern Governors' Association conference at The Greenbrier resort.

"Look, people make mistakes -- people are human," Kaine added. "You shouldn't cheat on your spouse. But you shouldn't cheat on your spouse and then think you can run for president and nobody will find it out. I mean everything about you is going to be found out," he continued.

Kaine said Edwards displayed a "recklessness about pursuing the presidency knowing that that was there. As I think recent experience has shown, those things come out."

The key line, as far as I'm concerned, is this: "you shouldn't cheat on your spouse and then think you can run for president and nobody will find it out."  Sorta like when Gary Hart dared the press to follow him around...to the Monkey Business with Donna Rice.  I wonder if some politicians almost have death wishes.

So sick of hearing about this (Terry85 - 8/10/2008 12:42:34 PM)
Why is it that Republicans incessantly lie, cheat and steal (recently, read also: Ted Stevens) and it gets virtually no mention in the MSM but a Democrat has some marital problems and it's a "stop story" each day for weeks on end?  I'm not saying what Edwards did was right but I'll take a man (or woman) with relationship issues over an individual who intentionally breaks the law ANY day.  Ugh!

Wounds (NP - 8/10/2008 2:23:22 PM)
It is just so embarrassing but Tim Kaine's statement helps.  We have to call it out.  I'm going to have to deal with this at work tomorrow.  I can point to Kaine now.

RTD story (jbvgoode - 8/10/2008 1:37:08 PM)
The lengthier RTD story on Tim Kaine today included the surprising news that the Governor had been on "vacation with his family at Camp Pendleton in Southern California."  The reference to "Southern California" (where there is a USMC Camp Pendleton) has been changed in the online RTD to read "Virginia Beach" (where Virginia's Camp Pendleton is located).  Almost surely not the reporter's mistake, but Ugh! again.

The National Enquirer & A Few Bloggers Waged A Campaign To Out This Story (Lee Diamond - 8/10/2008 3:50:00 PM)
This is a two year old story.  I just note that the media is having some fun with this.

The truth is that Edwards won very few delegates.  People liked his message, but where is the evidence that he had such a huge following to justify a feeding frenzy now?

There is no question that his behavior was reckless.  At the same time, too much time is being spent on this story.

Where's the balance? (Shawn - 8/10/2008 7:25:56 PM)
Edwards was caught and has acknowledged his infidelity and lying ....
but where in the press feeding frenzy are balanced reports of other former Republican presidential candidates like Rudy Giuliani and his sleazy extramarital affairs history .. or how about John McCain and his admitted affairs, and his most recent questionable relationship with lobbyist, Vicki Iseman ... last time I checked McCain is currently the presumptive Republican nominee for President of the United States of America

Edwards was with a woman (vatechhokies50 - 8/10/2008 9:49:02 PM)
Yes, it is terrible that someone would cheat on their spouse... but have you noticed that when Democrats are caught in the unfaithful zone, it's with a woman?

I sound like an auctioneer here.

Mind you, I have no problem with gay relationships (I'm heterosexual myself), but people shouldn't throw stones in glass houses, right?

Edwards will survive and be stronger for it.

It's Not About Sex, It's About Money (HisRoc - 8/10/2008 10:17:39 PM)
This thing is just getting warmed up, friends.  Where did Hunter get the money to buy her new $3M home in Santa Barbara, CA?  According to Fred Baron, the Edwards Campaign sent her "unspecified amounts" of money after she left the campaign.

So, here is John Edwards, son of a millworker and champion of the working class, collecting campaign contributions from people who were probably taking it out of their grocery budget.  And then spending it on hush money for a mistress?

I'm sorry.  Complain all you want about it being his personal life, about the Republican perverts not getting equal press, or whatever.  If this plays out the way I think it is going to, then John Edwards is going to turn out to be the most despicable public figure since Ken Lay.

Have to agree here (Alicia - 8/10/2008 11:14:58 PM)
and wonder if any of the video/housing money also included a stipulation that a paternity test would never be agreed to.

It's not just about an affair when your wife is cancer stricken and using her valuable energy to advocate and campaign for you, it's about the money.  And is very disappointing to say the least.

I'm Not Impressed, Gov. Kaine (HisRoc - 8/10/2008 10:27:17 PM)
So, it is forgiveable to commit adultery as long as you don't get caught and you aren't running for President?  That is the most absurd example of equivocating morality that I can possibly imagine.  No wonder that you can sleep easily at night after some of the decisions that you have made in office.
