Michelle Obama and Military SpousesContinuing a series of roundtable discussions begun early in the primary season, Michelle Obama visited with Virginia military spouses from the Hampton Roads area Wednesday afternoon at Old Dominion University. Mrs. Obama who has held roundtables for military spouses from Army Forts Bragg and Campbell got an earful from local Navy and Marine Corps spouses and veterans. Michelle was accompanied and introduced by Claudia Kennedy, a retired United States Army Lieutenant General, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and Vietnam War veteran Paul Bucha, and Delegate Joe Bouchard (Va 83rd HoD) a retired Navy Captain.
Mrs. Obama rolled out the " Plan to Support Virginia Military Families " which outlines policies Senator Obama would establish once in the White House. This roll out will continue as she visits additional areas during the campaign.  She also launched "Blue Star Families for Obama," a grassroots organization of military families who support Barack Obama because of his pro-military, veterans, and military families policies.

Hampton Roads Military Spouses Crowd in for the Next First LadyMichelle made it clear that she is focusing her efforts on military spouses because of the myriad challenges sustaining their families while their spouses are serving. She also proved that she fully grasps the issues raised as she discussed her observations and common concerns raised elsewhere. She has made the effort to hear firsthand the concerns of spouses who must balance work and family under conditions of uncertainty. She made clear her role communicating the information that has informed Senator Obama's vision to support America's military families. "If Barack has the distinct honor of serving as your President, and I have the privilege of serving as your First Lady, I'm going to keep taking your stories to him. Because the Commander-in-Chief doesn't just need to know how to lead the military; he needs to understand what war does to military families, and what he can do to make their lives better."

Remarkable woman (TheGreenMiles - 8/6/2008 8:49:26 PM)
Michelle Obama would be an amazing First Lady, one that would make you feel almost awkward to use the term since she's such a strong leader in her own right.

Agreed. (Lowell - 8/6/2008 9:16:41 PM)
Which is exactly why the Republicans try so hard to tear her down.

She is a remarkable woman.  Brilliant.  Kind.  Funny.  Grounded.  Incredibly strong.  And, of course, stunningly beautiful.  Michelle won the hearts of everybody in the room at the military spouses event and then did it again at the fundraiser at the Harrison Opera House this evening.  She is going to make us all so proud as First Lady.  The world will adore her.

Geez... (ub40fan - 8/6/2008 11:12:11 PM)

Just got back from the Michelle fundraiser... (lgb30856 - 8/7/2008 12:01:30 AM)
It should have been fun raiser. I had so much fun talking to the people in line and who sat with me.

I gave out Obama stickers I had bought online.

I am going to Denver as an Obama pledged from the 3rd Congressional District.

This is so funny. A lady in line with me had an awesome light jacket on. I said, "I am going to Denver and that would look great on TV". She said, "well you can have it, if you want". I said, I was just being funny.
She sat near me and we joked all night.
At the end of the evening, she had bundled it up and insisted I take it!!
I will wear on Thursday night when Barack is nominated.
We are a great family!!!!!!!!!

I was at the event at the Harrison Opera House and agree that Michelle Obama was as beautiful, charming and warm as described.  She also has amazing charisma and presence.

I also agree that Susan Mariner rocks.
