Just wanted to pass along a rumor...well, more than a rumor because it's from a super-reliable source.  It appears that Del. Steve Shannon may have some competition in his run for the Democratic Attorney General nomination in 2009. That would be one Dick Cranwell, current DPVA chair, whose term will end in...yes, 2009. Reportedly, Cranwell hasn't made a definite decision yet, but is busy talking to people about a run for AG.  Stay tuned!

Please, Please, Please, Dickie (martin lomasney - 7/30/2008 11:09:07 PM)
save us from vapid vacuous Steve Shannon

It might be like... (Tom Joad (Kevin) - 7/31/2008 12:04:36 AM)
ice skating uphill as Shannon has nearly $450,000 on hand as of the last report. I know money is not everything but that's a heckuva hole to climb out of. Shannon also was a huge help in terms of support in the takeover of the Senate in 2007 and has helped lay the groundwork for a House takeover in 2009.

If there is a primary contest, I hope it can stay above the fray unlike the Moran/Deeds, Deeds/Moran race.

Is he related to (presidentialman - 7/31/2008 2:34:44 AM)
that other Cranwell, in the Virginia General Assembly , or am I thinking of a different person?

What "other Cranwell?" (Lowell - 7/31/2008 7:56:17 AM)

Cranwell (martha - 7/31/2008 6:00:17 AM)
He was in the GA. He could probably raise a great deal of money pretty fast and having a well known person from Roanoke along w/ Bowerbank from Russell County would be good for this side of the state.

Money No Problem (Elaine in Roanoke - 7/31/2008 8:54:06 AM)
Dickie Cranwell would have absolutely no problem raising money. He's been around the party forever. If he decides to run, Shannon will have a real fight on his hands. Cranwell is a formidable candidate.

Why now? (Teddy - 7/31/2008 10:47:03 AM)
Mr. Cranwell is a shrewd, ruthless but likeable and gentlemanly Old School politician who has, by most accounts, done a good job as Chair of the Democratic Party of Virginia.

While I never really thought the old war horse would retire from politics when he left the DPVA post, I am wondering why he might choose to run exactly now for statewide office, and why for Adjutant General. Has he had his eye on that specific spot before? Does he think Shannon cannot win, although Shannon is a good campaigner, a moderate with appeal downstate?  Does Cranwell feel an obligation to protect us for from four more years of hard right manipulation by Republicans in general, and he fears Shannon, if he were elected, would not be able to muster the moxie to do so, especially if it comes to warfare over more voter suppression and re-districting sleaze by Republicans? Does Dickie just want to keep his hand in--- after all, why waste his considerable power and connections by simply retiring and leaving the scene of power? Answers, anybody?
