The result of years of Republican rule

Southside Virginia has been (and continues to be) a fairly conservative area, reliably voting for Republican candidates and Virgil Goode. What has that gotten us?

Each morning on the way to work I drive through about 2.5 miles of mostly residential, middle-class areas in Martinsville. Today as I drove home my son took these photos from the car window:

Fourteen houses for sale on my route--due in large part to a combination of outsourcing, low wages for the jobs that remain, and the current housing disaster. I can't see how anyone who lives in an area like this can continue to vote for people like John McCain who want to continue the same failed policies (and who think we are just whining and imagining our economic stress), or for people like Virgil Goode who have enabled these policies. My Southside neighbors who would vote Republican need to be reminded of this, and consider whether or not they'll be better off next year with more of the same.

I just found out... (Science Virginian - 7/29/2008 1:22:07 AM)
...that Tom Perriello is doing an event this Wednesday on Spruce Street in Martinsville, right where most of these photos were taken.
