Anatomy of an Anti-Obama Smear

This is truly heinous:

An e-mail attacking Barack Obama and widely spread by Republican bloggers and activists has been revealed to be a fraud. These false e-mails are all too common--the Republican Party seems to be relying on these false stories and rumors to defeat Barack Obama. What is uncommon is that this time the perpetrator was caught and exposed: Army Captain Jeffrey S. Porter of the Utah National Guard was behind the following false e-mail...

[...]

This entire e-mail is a fake, an infamous libel against Barack Obama's good name. You see, Jeffrey S. Porter--a man who is obviously unfit to carry a commission in the armed forces of the United States, intended this false e-mail to be mass e-mailed anonymously so that Barack Obama would never get the opportunity to confront his false accuser. But Porter's wife made the mistake of forwarding the e-mail under his real name to friends and family, who soon forwarded it on to complete strangers. In only a few days, the e-mail was tracked back to Porter. When confronted by his superior officers, Porter admitted that the allegations he made in the e-mail were false. The Army Times has also refuted the story and Snopes has refuted it online.

For the entire story, see here.  Just keep in mind that there are a lot of these false emails floating around out there, including all kinds of smears against Barack Obama.  We have to be constantly vigilant in exposing this garbage and not allowing it to take root.  Let's make sure that in 2008, our nominee doesn't get Swift Boated again!

These Libels Should be Referred to as Porters... (dsvabeachdems - 7/27/2008 8:20:05 AM)
henceforth, as in "This is another Obama Porter" or "You're Portering Obama." A reminder to all who have sworn an oath to protect and defend the Constitution. A caution to all who blather meaninglessly "support the troops" when they are using code for "support the President."

And we should watch to see if Porter is drummed out or allowed to slide.

Those who believe in our servicemen (and women) cannot stay silent (Yorktown82 - 7/27/2008 3:37:31 PM)
I posted my reaction to this ugliness elsewhere, but it is doubly troubling that the conduit lives in our very own commonwealth! I simply cannot find any rationale for Tiffany Porter's action that justifies what she did.

What saddens me most is that this particular Captain would choose to hide behind the skirts of his wife in spreading this smear. What kinds of values are these parents attempting to instill in their children?

They are both equally culpable in this noxious effort to undermine the political process, despite the line that he puportedly is "not a very political person." I am surprised THAT line didn't immediately raise a red flag before the more gullible decided to pass it along!

Does anyone seriously believe that a mother of six would be making the effort to spread this garbage if she were not completely in cahoots with him? Get real! This was hardly a personal note and clearly was never intended to be anything other than what it ended up being. How many other viral emails has Tiffany taken the time to pass along to every possible contact from Charlottesville to Ogden?

What angers me more is the notion that this is a Captain who somehow thinks he is "providing" freedom. He is supposed to be defending that very same freedom, not undermining what so many of better "caliber" have fought and sacrificed for.

"... after checking my sources some of the information that was put out in my e-mail was wrong."

Perhaps the most pathetic attempt at CYA I have ever seen in some time! If this is any indication of the quality of his work, then any loved one who has someone depending on the intelligence he is providing should have justified concerns!
