While C-Span is covering Senator Barack Obama's speech live from Germany today at 1 p.m. EST, we are left to wonder why two other stops on his itinerary were cancelled. Spiegel Online has the update:

++ Visit to US Military Bases Cancelled ++
1:42 p.m.: SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned that Obama has cancelled a planned short visit to the Rammstein and Landstuhl US military bases in the southwest German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The visits were planned for Friday. "Barack Obama will not be coming to us," a spokesperson for the US military hospital in Landstuhl announced. "I don't know why." Shortly before the same spokeswoman had announced a planned visit by Obama.

This really bothers me (Catzmaw - 7/24/2008 2:36:08 PM)
Landstuhl is THE place where our wounded warriors go before being sent home to the U.S.  I spend a lot of time on military websites and the constant refrain in these conservative leaning forums is that Obama is afraid to be around the troops, that he's avoiding meeting with the military, that he's afraid of a bad reception, that he doesn't really value the troops and their service, etc., etc.

The only way to knock down this canard is to MAKE time to go to military bases and meet the troops, especially the wounded.    I guarantee that if you log on to Military.com or VAJoe.com you will find lots of nasty criticisms and charges that the troops are not important to Obama.  I know that Obama spent time with some troops in Iraq/Afghanistan, but these are the wounded who've just been taken from the battlefield.  To promise to see them and then retract it is a real misstep.  Does anyone know why the visits were canceled?

Did the State Department require he cancel? (VA Breeze - 7/24/2008 4:44:40 PM)
The earlier part of the trip was with Hagel and Reed-Is Bush trying to push McSame's "Obama doesn't support the troops?" campaign?

probably put him on the no-fly list, and he'll be stopped at JFK when he gets back.

Hey, it happened to Cat Stevens.
