Conservatives to Obama: Know Your Role

Conservatives are already getting tired of this uppity black man who doesn't know his place in the order of things. On WTOP this morning, Cal Thomas declared, "A little humility never hurt anybody." And from Charles Krauthammer last week:

It is a subject upon which he can dilate effortlessly. In his victory speech upon winning the nomination, Obama declared it a great turning point in history -- "generations from now we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment" -- when, among other wonders, "the rise of the oceans began to slow." As Hudson Institute economist Irwin Stelzer noted in his London Daily Telegraph column, "Moses made the waters recede, but he had help." Obama apparently works alone. [...]

For the first few months of the campaign, the question about Obama was: Who is he? The question now is: Who does he think he is?

First of all, I'm just shocked - shocked - that the Hudson Institute would bash Obama's climate action stance considering they've received multiple donations from ExxonMobil. Nice source, Krauthammer and the Washington Post op-ed page.

You can trace this line of attack back to Karl Rove himself. Remember the "guy at the country club with the beautiful date" remark?

Conservatives can't just pull a Blazing Saddles and yell, "The sheriff is a (RING)!" So they're working hard to draw out any subliminal racism they can find, accusing him of being arrogant and not knowing his place. Don't let them get away with it.

You mean like this? (Lowell - 7/23/2008 8:25:22 AM)

Where'd this clip come from? (Teddy - 7/23/2008 9:52:25 AM)
Hahaha, ugh. Makes me ready to join a new coalition: "N*****s for the New Sheriff"... me bein' an antique Northern European female, an' all.
Actually, just "People for the new Sheriff" would do just fine.

If you mean what movie... (Pain - 7/23/2008 9:56:45 AM)
..it's blazing saddles.

When Senator Obama is elected, I think we'll see a lot of those same blank stares from every corner of this nation.  And, I can't wait.

When he is elected... (ericy - 7/23/2008 10:19:52 AM)

We can just get bumper stickers that say "There is a new sheriff in town".

Actually, my favorite joke from that scene (aznew - 7/23/2008 10:23:04 AM)
has always been the awful "We offer this laurel, and hardy handshake..."

For future reference, if you don't want someone to look Presidential (Silence Dogood - 7/23/2008 3:22:50 PM)
don't suggest he should go spend an evening hob-knobbing with the King of Jordan.  (Seriously, the King personally drove Obama to the airport to catch his flight?  You probably actually deserve to be at least a little bit full of itself when the head of state from a foreign nation personally offers to give you a lift).

I could understand Krauthammer's confusion, of course, since "looking Presidential" has apparently meant clearing brush on a ranch in Texas for the past 7.5 years....

Don't forget (Teddy - 7/23/2008 4:11:55 PM)
that awesome b-i-g belt buckle, like something the winner of a rodeo would sport, that Bush is so careful to wear for every such photo-op while clearing brush. Don't you think that contributes mightily to the "presidential look?"

As for the royal chauffeur, I gleaned a couple of things from that story: 1) Jordan's King is no fool, and based what he did on his observations of how our King George likes to be treated (if only the Secret Service would allow it) and 2) Jordan's King (who, as I recall is half American) has already chosen his candidate for the American Presidency, and is simply polishing the apple in advance, being prudent and having foresight.

His mother was British, not American (Silence Dogood - 7/23/2008 5:21:05 PM)
He did, however, go to grade school here in the States.  I have a hard time being cynical about this particular man because he's just so freaking earnest about his likes and dislikes (crazy example: since he's a big science fiction fan, he once fought for a role in a Star Trek episode).  It's entirely possible that Abdullah II discovered that he sincerely likes Obama as much as the rest of us do.

All is know... (Kindler - 7/23/2008 8:51:28 PM)
...is that King Abdullah, just like his daddy, found himself one breathtaking queen.

As long as we're quoting Mel Brooks: "It's good to be the king!"

Is Charles Krauthammer for real? (Kindler - 7/23/2008 8:53:24 PM)
All these years I thought that he was just a hilarious parody of a foaming-at-the-mouth conservative, like Colbert.

You mean he's not a joke?  I mean -- not intentionally...?
