Del. Todd Gilbert Says Barack Obama's "a borderline communist"

Is Del. Gilbert desperate or has he lost his mind?

For all McCain's flaws, he's a far better choice for conservatives than Obama, Gilbert added.

"Barack Obama is a borderline communist. He is a Marxist and everything that goes along with it," Gilbert said. "He thinks the government is the solution to every problem that any of you have in this room."

That's against the nature of most Republicans.

"We just don't believe that," he said. "I believe that most people, people that get up and go to work and try to raise a family ... they are not big-government socialists."

I mean, you hear this kind of lunacy from the right-wing blogosphere and talk show hosts quite frequently, but this guy Gilbert is actually an elected official here in Virginia. Just imagine for a moment if a Democratic delegate called John McCain a "Nazi," a "fascist," or whatever. The shrieks from the "rightosphere" would be deafening.  Let's see how quickly they condemn Del. Gilbert for his outrageous comments about Barack Obama. [cue sound of crickets chirping...]

If anyone would like to register their disapproval with Delegate Gilbert (Adam Sharp - 7/21/2008 11:38:04 AM)
His office number is (540) 459-7550.

Our Full-blown Communist Banker (buzzbolt - 7/21/2008 11:51:18 AM)
Someone needs to notify Del. Gilbert that since he enjoys throwing the term "Communist" around, he needs to examine the fact that the largest Communist government that has ever existed, The People's Republic of China,  is a major lender to the United States of America.  They are our banker, pumping billions of dollars into our massive debt.

Defining your opponent (Teddy - 7/21/2008 12:38:45 PM)
is Mr. Gilbert's schtick. This is one of the favorite narratives of the righties: all Democrats are irresponsible "liberals," or, if they are really fired up, "Communists." I just received a nice fat letter from some non-profit outfit (I'll have to retrieve the letter from the trash to get the exact name) flying under the name of Justice Watchdog or some such. They posed the question (on the outside of the envelope in big bold letters): "What do you know About Barack Obama?" According to them, and they style themselves one of the top 10 political watchdogs in Washington, the public deserves to know just who Obama is, and they tell us "you will never get the true information from the 'liberal' media, so please send them a donation so they can investigate Obama's nefarious real etate deals with Chicago's corrupt developers, yadayada. If I had any doubts, their use of "liberal media" halfway through the letter was a dead giveaway that this is just another front organisation of the rightwing similar to Swift Boaters for Truth. They are up to no good, but are another example of Todd Gilbert's party-line talking points attack.

The amusing thing here is that it is the neo-conservatives who were themselves originally Parlor Pinks in the days of the Depression and World War II, who later converted to an equally virulent neo-conservatism. These folks today are the offspring of that original Marxist crew, and if anybody knows Marxism, it is this bunch of fakers, still echoing the mindset of Communist agitprop all these years later. Jim Webb has referred to them as Trotskyites, by the way.

Rear-view Mirror Republicans. (Bubby - 7/21/2008 12:46:34 PM)
Gilbert and his Mountain Valley Republicans continue to pimp false issues because they don't want anyone to notice that Republican deregulation of financial and commodity markets have led to the real-estate disaster, record energy prices, and record indebtedness.  Todd Gilbert should focus on keeping a few good paying jobs in the Valley, and ending the Republican Party policy of "borrow and spend".

What Buzzbolt said!

borderline (pvogel - 7/21/2008 1:26:27 PM)
Republicans  Nazi   whats the diff???

Remind me (Silence Dogood - 7/21/2008 3:35:23 PM)
The President of the United States is advocating that the Government should buy out Fannie Mae and Feddie Mac and his Fed chair has already endorsed one Government buy-out/aquisition for IndyMAC without consulting the Dem-controlled Congress.

So remind me, which party is it that wants the government to own and operate everything?

Obama's a communist (vapackrat - 7/21/2008 4:54:49 PM)
I'm a Mountain Valley Democrat.  I sent Gilbert an e mail this morning telling him he was late for his Storm Troopers meeting.  this guy is a nut case.  Thank god he can only do damage in one state.

Interesting (HisRoc - 7/21/2008 5:20:49 PM)
I'm always amused when Republicans call for "getting government off the backs of the people," "less government interference," and "the government is not the solution to every problem."  However, let one wacko burn a flag and they want a Constitutional amendment to repeal the free speech clause of the First Amendment.  Let one town in upstate New York conduct a gay marriage and they want a new Federal law.  Best of all, let one family split over the decision to terminate life support of a poor woman lost in a persistent vegatative state and the Republican Senate Majority Leader becomes a neurology specialist by long distance and convenes an all-nighter to pass a Federal law proscribing it.

They have no shame.
