Fredericksburg Dems Want Hummel, Matthews to Step Aside

The Fredericksburg Democratic Committee just passed a unanimous resolution asking that not only Keith Hummel withdraw as a candidate for Congress in the 1st District, but Suzette Matthews step down as 1st District Committee Chair as well. Hummel has only suspended his campaign, he's still technically the nominee. If and when he does step aside we can nominate a replacement.

According to the Free Lance-Star, Fredericksburg Democratic Committe Chair Amy LaMarca didn't introduce these resolutions nor did she vote on either of them. LaMarca serves on the 1st District Committee with Suzette Matthews. Fredericksburg Democrats say that Hummel should have been vetted more thoroughly before he was selected to run against Congressman Rob Wittman this November.

This is the latest chapter in a saga I like to call, 'Rob Wittman: Luckiest Man Alive'. Elected to the House of Delegates in 2005, because Albert Pollard chose not to run for re-election. He then won the GOP nomination for the Dec. special election to replace the late Congresswoman JoAnn Davis. Why? Because he was the only elected official to actually run in that race, made possible by the fact that he was running unopposed in the 99th last November. Every other big name in the 1st had to focus on getting re-elected in their local races just days before the 1st CD nominating conventions.

One term in the House of Delegates, a month-long campaign for Congress, and he's got himself a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for as long as he wants it. Only in Virginia. I hate this stupid district. (the gerrymandering mainly, not the people in it)

Finally (Tiderion - 7/20/2008 4:03:38 AM)
We see some movement out there. I've spoken with some influential people in the southern end of the district and everyone wants to move but there is no unifying force to keep everyone going the same direction. I know there are good people on the 1st CD Committee but maybe we need to replace them with fresh faces. We could to a lot to improve the functionality of the district's organization too. I mean, we could even start with a better website.

When does Fredvegas hold its regular meetings? Maybe i'll drive up from Williamsburg to visit next time.

One more thing (Tiderion - 7/20/2008 4:13:10 AM)
How would people view John McGlennon running for Congress again? He too lost by narrow margins in years past. He ran in '82 and '84.

Ms. LaMarca, while chair in Fredericksburg, is not a member of the First District Congressional Committee.
