Sad news from the Fairfax County Democratic Committee:

I am sorry to announce that Former State Senator Joseph V. Gartlan, Jr. died early this morning. He was 82 years-old. He represented the Mt. Vernon and Lee sections of Fairfax County for 28 years in the State Senate and was one of the ablest legislators Fairfax County has been fortunate enough to have serving them.

He was a beacon of common sense in a legislature that was increasingly dominated by ideology and intolerance. His wit, wisdom, and spirit will be dearly missed.

Man, we could really use some of Sen. Gartlan's "common sense" and "wisdom" today in Virginia!  Rest in peace, sir.

Joe Was a Huge Presence In Richmond (Scott Surovell - 7/18/2008 12:15:37 PM)
He hasn't been in the legislature since 1999, but when he was there Joe was a leader.  He was smart as a whip, respected by his colleagues on both sides of the aisle and got things done.

It really says something about his abilities when the retirement article describes him as a liberal beacon and he had Republicans lauding him at his retirement ceremony.

The real point... (cvllelaw - 7/18/2008 5:17:30 PM)
...is that Republicans in 1999 had some couth.

Gov. Kaine statement (Lowell - 7/18/2008 1:05:15 PM)
"Senator Gartlan was a true statesman. He wore his heart on his sleeve when it came to issues of social and economic justice," said Governor Kaine. "He was a tireless and effective advocate for the environment, the mentally and physically disabled, and for abused and neglected children. He spearheaded efforts for funding natural resources and human service programs during his almost three decades of public service. His role was critical in galvanizing the regional efforts to clean up the Chesapeake Bay.

"He earned the respect of both parties for his intellect, integrity, and force of will. Over the years, he served as chairman of three Senate committees - Courts of Justice, Privileges and Elections, and Rehabilitation and Social Services.  He also was a bold and active member of the Senate Finance committee, where he chaired the human services subcommittee.

"This is a sad day for Virginia, and our hearts are with Senator Gartlan's family and many friends."

Very sad. (spotter - 7/18/2008 4:39:55 PM)
Joe Gartlan was one of the good guys in politics -- a commonsense Democrat who got things done.
