Gilmore Gang Guilty of "Trackerphobia"?

Good evening, RK!  I am writing to report on a very recent Jim Gilmore campaign incident and then to ask your opinion at the end of this diary...

First and foremost, you need to know that Lowell and I discussed by telephone earlier this (Tuesday, July 8) afternoon several titles for this diary, and it easily could have been named "Tracker Paranoia?" or "Tracker Confronted!" or even "Tracker's Rights Marginalized?!"  With Lowell's help, I finally settled on the "Gilmore Gang" reference above since that is one of my favorite phrases to describe former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore and many of his paid and volunteer campaigners.

As you may know, Jim Gilmore was on the U. S. Senate campaign trail today along the I-81 corridor, and he stopped off at the Orange Market convenience store outside Salem in Roanoke County at 9:00 A.M. for a scheduled media event there.

As an avid Mark Warner for U. S. Senate volunteer, I promised his campaign's Courtney Dozier that I would take along and employ my large, old VHS video camera while attending the Roanoke County event, especially since its location is so close to my home and my office, at a place where I do business every week, and that's important, as you will soon see...
I arrived at the Orange Market just before 9:00 A.M. and, wearing a white, short-sleeved dress shirt and black pants and carrying my big old camera, I blended in easily with the news media who had already gathered there.  Of course, they all knew me and began giving me a hard time about my "new job", but it was all in good fun and there was much laughter and good-natured ribbing.

So, for the ensuing 35 minutes or so, I freely filmed Jim Gilmore talking with various convenience market customers and its owner about the high price of gasoline and why - according to Gilmore - that is all Mark Warner's fault, and how Gilmore intended to fix everything immediately if elected to the U. S. Senate.

During that entire time I kept a very respectful distance between me and Jim Gilmore, stayed out of the way of the media, never asked a single question nor made a single comment.

If you look closely, you can catch glimpses of me filming Gilmore in these July 8 clips from WSLS TV Channel 10 (NBC affiliate) News available at this link:  http://www.wsls.com/sls/news/l... and on WDBJ TV Channel 7 (CBS affiliate) News available at this link:  http://www.wdbj7.com/Global/st... while always doing so at respectful distances.

Finally, at the end of the formal interview stage of this campaign stop, when the various news media had put away their cameras and gathered up their microphones and other equipment, and after I had turned off my camera and was preparing to leave, I was challenged by one of the Gilmore Gang's members, a young lady who introduced herself as being on his staff, asked my name and then began to question why I was there and what I was going to do with my video recording.

At last she asked if I had been employed by Mark Warner to film the event, and I laughed and assured her that I had not.  (Heck, I thought to myself, I was having way too much fun to ever even think of asking anyone to pay me to do this!)

As I walked away from the dwindling gathering, I overheard one of the local network reporters ask Gilmore what he thought about Jim Webb's decision to withdraw his name from consideration as a possible vice-presidential running mate with Barack Obama, so I turned my camera back on and began filming Gilmore's response, and this is when it got interesting...

After a few seconds, a tall young man stepped in front of me in order to block my view of Gilmore, so I moved around to the side and continued to film Gilmore's response.  Then someone's hand was placed directly in front of the camera lens, and when I attempted to move out of the way of this obstruction, the person continued to keep his hand in front of the camera.

I laughed and pulled the camera away from my face but kept the camera recording, and the same young lady then explained that this was a media event and that trackers were to stay at least 10 feet back from Gilmore at all times.  Of course, by that time I was considerably farther back from him than 10 feet, but that little detail didn't seem to matter to them.

I asked if she was telling me that there is a rule or a law that I could not videotape Gilmore, but then another young man answered my question by saying that there was no law that prevented him from placing his hand in front of my camera.

By then, this particular Gilmore Gang gathering consisted of the young lady and three young men, and they circled around me and continued to challenge my purpose for being there and decided that they would have the Orange Market's owner ask me to leave.

I explained to them that the owner and I were good friends but, of course, they challenged me on that, too.  It must not have mattered to them that I had been inside the owner's store earlier and had filmed his entire conversation with Gilmore for a full two minutes with no objections raised whatsoever.

I made sure to videotape the faces of all four Gilmore Gang members before I left, but I certainly did not want to place the Orange Market's owner in the position of having to decide whether to ask a long-time customer and friend to leave his business premises, so I left quietly of my own accord.

Of course, all of this is on tape, and I also took along a friend to serve as a witness in case that became necessary.  As we left the Orange Market premises, one of the young male Gilmore Gang members followed us across the parking lot and kept watch on us as we crossed the street, talked together for a moment and then got into our cars to leave.

Tomorrow morning my video tape will be converted to several DVDs and I will also have those final 90 seconds - when the Gilmore Gang obstructed and confronted me - of filming converted to either a JPEG or an MPEG file so that it can be transmitted via e-mail to the Warner campaign, to Raising Kaine if you'd like, and perhaps to YouTube for greater potential broadcast purposes.

Your opinions, please:  Would you like to see the video - or at last those final 90 seconds - here on RK, and is this episode worthy of YouTube publication?

Thanks!

Steve

Yes (Barbara - 7/8/2008 11:20:39 PM)
Please share.  I'd love to see it.  How many people came to see him?

Tallying up the votes... (cycle12 - 7/8/2008 11:35:13 PM)
Thanks, Barbara; during the day tomorrow I'll be tallying up the votes for publication of the video and, if there's sufficient interest, I'll post it here on RK first.

To answer your question, I would estimate that approximately 10 or 15 people came to the Orange Market specifically to talk with Gilmore, and there were another 5 or 10 customers who happened upon him at the convenience market and were included in this staged photo opportunity.

Back to you tomorrow, and thanks again!

Tracker Suggestion (oldsoldier - 7/9/2008 7:04:37 AM)
Great job and I'd like to see it,  I assume the young man and lady were republicans of military age supporting the most conservative and patriotic of the presidential candidates. Should any other "trackers" have their lenses "legally" blocked, they should ask on the sound track why the Gilmore young patriots are not in the military "over there" in Iraq ala the documentary made at a young republicans convention not so long ago.

Really tired of these people, really tired.

A strong, decisive electoral victory in November... (cycle12 - 7/9/2008 8:20:50 AM)
...will do much to further reduce their political numbers and intensity, "oldsoldier", and I'm in complete agreement with your comments and analysis above.

Thanks!

Steve

I'd be interested in seeing it (aznew - 7/9/2008 12:02:41 AM)
Depending upon what is on the tape, good editing, along with some voice-over  narration, can be pretty effective in making the point that Gilmore is trying to hide something. I'm sure Lowell can hook you up.

Also, FWIW, if you were in fear for your safety, and if any of those guys touched you or your camera, I'd file a police report about it (their touching you under those circumstances would make it a battery, I believe).  It sounds like it was pretty threatening in a brown-shirt sort of way. That said, doing so could start you down a tough path.

Thanks, "aznew"; good points all! (cycle12 - 7/9/2008 12:32:20 AM)
You are correct about a possible charge of battery, and as a circuit court clerk I'm fairly familiar with such laws and legal protections but, to be totally honest with you, some of the sounds that you will hear on the video are of me laughing several times during this confrontation.

No one touched me nor my camera and I never felt threatened in any way, although I think a smaller, less well-trained person might have experienced that sort of initial reaction to the Gilmore Gang's weak attempts at subtle intimidation.

I'm a fairly large guy who tries to stay in shape, and I haven't forgotten the many valuable mental and physical lessons that I learned on my way to earning a third degree blackbelt in taekwondo many years ago.

As any good martial artist will tell you, always do everything possible to avoid a fight, so when the Gilmore Gang's efforts began to push up against potential conflict, I walked away.

Agreed; I have discussed with Lowell how the video may be best employed, and he has suggested that I send it to Eric for further consideration and a recommendation about its possible future use.

Please stay tuned, and thanks again!

Steve

Please post it (Red Sox - 7/9/2008 12:09:52 AM)
I'd love to see the Gilmore Gang running scared. I guess being down 60-33 will do that to you...

Good point, "Red Sox"! (cycle12 - 7/9/2008 9:04:05 AM)
Looking back at yesterday's event, I recorded nothing that wasn't already being recorded by the various MSM representatives there, so just what were those Gilmore Gang members worried about?

Which leads me to another favorite phrase - "justifiable paranoia".

Do they fear a "macaca moment" out of their candidate?

We'll just have to work on that, won't we...?

Thanks!

Steve

Who does this guy think he is? (Also Steve - 7/9/2008 12:10:05 AM)
Mr. Gilmore is taking time out of his busy schedule to personally put gas in the tanks of Authentic Working Class Americans, and this McGraw character has nothing better to do than bully the campaign staff.  For shame.

Very funny, son... (cycle12 - 7/9/2008 12:46:32 AM)
But you know, at one particular point in the video, a poor soul - who explains to Gilmore how much the high gasoline prices are negatively affecting his meager income - asks if Gilmore intends to pay for the gas that he is pumping for him, and Gilmore rapidly declines to do so.

Later, when Gilmore offers to pump gas into a motorcycle, the biker is obviously nervous about the possibility that Gilmore might overfill the tank and eventually finishes the job for himself.

As a biker myself, I certaiinly don't need Jim Gilmore messing with my motorcycle and, even more importantly, I certainly don't need "Mr. NO CAR TAX" as my next U. S. Senator.

It all gets down to this:  ELECT MARK WARNER!!

Thanks!

Job retraining (Also Steve - 7/9/2008 10:49:52 PM)
The way I see it, Gilmore is getting good practice for the second career that awaits him after Warner kicks his sad Republican heinie all over the Commonwealth.

Some Democracy (BlueSWVA - 7/9/2008 12:45:12 AM)
After reading this post, I am struck by the complete lack of respect shown to you, but more importantly, their arrogance, ignorance and indifference to your ability to be able to freely assemble.  They are, in fact, working for someone who supposedly wishes to represent your concerns in Washington.  If their boss can not handle "the pressures" of a Salem Farmer's Market, how qualified is he really?  I think most Virginians know the answer to that.

If for no other reason, though I have plenty, I would vote against Jim Gilmore for hiring clowns that care less about protecting basic Constitutional freedoms (it is not their fault, this has never been a true Republican strong suit, mind you) and more about making sure their boss doesn't look like an idiot.

Fire them, Jim and send them back to whichever state it is from which they came.

Steve, my only bit of advice - at some point, you should have put down the camera and you should have purchased a few tomatoes.

Another good laugh! (cycle12 - 7/9/2008 12:57:13 AM)
Thanks so much, "BlueSWVA", for your tomato purchasing recommendation which gave me yet another good laugh!

You are absolutely correct, of course, and throughout this entire process I made sure to do absolutely nothing to antagonize Jim Gilmore nor any of his Gang members in any way.

I truly believe that's why I was allowed to tape the event for more than 30 minutes without question or interruption, and I suspect that it was only after a late-arriving local Republican identified me to one of Gilmore's Gang members that they decided to interfere with me.

Thanks again!

Steve

Roanoke Times Covers Gilmore's Visit to County (cycle12 - 7/9/2008 1:32:08 AM)
In my final posting for this evening/morning, here are two links to the Roanoke Times July 9 online newspaper coverage of Jim Gilmore's July 8 visit to Roanoke County:

It just gets better and better, doesn't it?

MARK WARNER FOR U.S. SENATE!!

Trackerphobia (talltexaninva - 7/9/2008 5:07:39 AM)
I say show us the whole film, and if you do decide to put it up please send it to the senate guru at http://www.senateguru.com/ so we can show the whole world what we already know, that Jim Gilmore and his staff are a bunch or idiotic morons.

Another excellent suggestion, "TTIV"! (cycle12 - 7/9/2008 8:22:57 AM)
Thanks!

Steve

go get 'em Steve! (martha - 7/9/2008 6:37:06 AM)
My PH Hero! ;-)
Roanoke County is LUCKY to have you!

And Lynchburg is lucky to have you, Martha! (cycle12 - 7/9/2008 8:34:52 AM)
I do a lot of hard work for Democrats here in the Roanoke Valley, but my efforts pale in significance to yours there in the Lynchburg area.

And, speaking of Roanoke's Patrick Henry High School, I need to pause here for a brief commercial break and let you know that we just decided to have our 40th PH class reunion at the Coffee Pot on Brambleton Aveune from 4:00 - 7:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 27.

During those hours there's no cover charge for the band that will be playing later that evening if you wish to stay, there are no reservations required although the Pot would like to know how many of us to expect, and their menu is excellent while their food and beverage prices are very reasonable.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program...

ELECT MARK WARNER!!

Thanks again!

Steve

Fun (martha - 7/9/2008 12:18:54 PM)
Maybe...have never been to a single reunion! 40 is a good time to start I guess.

Post it all (Ron Wilson - 7/9/2008 6:48:39 AM)
Please do post it on RK.  The voters need to see this blatent act of censorship in a situation where it does not belong.

Agreed, Ron... (cycle12 - 7/9/2008 8:43:54 AM)
...and, most likely, what I'll do is e-mail to Eric and Lowell later today the MPEG clip of that final 90-seconds in my video where the Gilmore Gang's attempts at censorship began and ask that they put it up here on RK as soon as possible, and then I will overnight the full 40-minute DVD to them for further use as they deem appropriate.

Lowell and Eric, please send me your preferred e-mail and snail-mail addresses for receipt of the MPEG file and the DVD, hopefully to be sent early this afternoon.

Thanks!

Steve

Steve,We have found that using a cable modem or decent DSL circuit (Used2Bneutral - 7/9/2008 9:09:08 AM)
You can send even a whole DVD if necessary using AOL's AIM.... the send file has no practical limit and it is FREE.... we use it to submit videos and TV shows to our Public Access station...... so we don't have any delivery delay..... if I can help with any of this as always just ask.... we can convert anything to anything now.... JimS@NoVa.org

Thanks, Jim; will do! (cycle12 - 7/9/2008 9:14:20 AM)
At 11:00 A.M. today (Wednesday, July 9) I will be at the video store picking up my DVDs and arranging for the 90-second MPEG file e-mailing process, and I may need to talk with you while I'm there, so please send your phone number to me at cycle12@comcast.net.

Thanks again!

Steve

In regards to the Macaca Moment (Bubby - 7/9/2008 10:38:23 AM)
Down in Dickenson County in 2006 George Allen was speaking before an assembled group, in a public place and was being videoed by MSM outfits when he singled out S.R. Sidarth and called him "macaca'.  Yet none of those media outlets saw fit to let the public know that their Senator was an elitist, racist boor.  The video had to be released on the blogs before it found it's way back to the MSM.

That is why we do this video work.  To keep them honest.

Exactly, and that's just one way in which (Lowell - 7/9/2008 10:41:56 AM)
citizen journalism is so important. If the corporate media's not going to do it, then citizens will have to do it for themselves.  Fortunately, they are.

By the way, Helen Thomas is scathingly critical of her profession.  I had an interesting talk with her about the rise of blogs stemming to an extent from the decline of journalism in the public interest.

Precisely, Lowell... (cycle12 - 7/9/2008 11:45:31 AM)
...precisely.

Thanks!

Steve

Cool! (Doug in Mount Vernon - 7/9/2008 12:09:25 PM)
Helen Thomas rocks...

Excellent point, "Bubby"! (cycle12 - 7/9/2008 11:44:50 AM)
Thanks!

Steve

Guess we need dozens of volunteers with video cameras for every Gilmore Event (snolan - 7/9/2008 12:01:22 PM)
How many goons can he employ?  He has so few supporters it's likely we'll outnumber them with Warner volunteers!

Huge kudos to you for avoiding the escalation towards violence.

Agreed, Scott; violence is unnecessary... (cycle12 - 7/9/2008 1:55:08 PM)
...and it's very unattractive.

We will beat them with a better control of the issues and a stronger intellect in general and, of course, we have the best possible candidate - Mark Warner!

Thanks!

Steve

Show it! (legacyofmarshall - 7/9/2008 2:34:53 PM)
Seriously, what isn't "worthy of YouTube publication" - that's what's great about the website - if someone wants to see something they will, if not, it will go ignored.  Leave it up to the tubes-using public to decide whether it's politically relevant or not.  Please post the video(s)!

Agreed. (Lowell - 7/9/2008 2:46:34 PM)

Video in three file formats (cycle12 - 7/9/2008 7:50:52 PM)
Thanks, Lowell; I have just sent to you, Brian and Eric via e-mail the 90-second clip of my "confrontation" with the Gilmore Gang in three formats:  Windows Media Player, MPEG and AVI.

As I mentioned in my e-mail message to you, I will also send RK a DVD copy of my full 40-minute July 8 Gilmore Gang taping session via overnight snail-mail as soon as you provide me with a physical address for same.

Please view the clip, post it here if you'd like, and let the rest of us know whether you would recommend it for YouTube.

Thanks again!

Steve

Yes! Shame them! (Jack Landers - 7/9/2008 3:03:57 PM)
Public humiliation is the best way to deal with those sorts of people. They try to keep cameras away because they fear exposure, so obviously ramping up that exposure is the best response that you can offer.

Rudeness personified (cycle12 - 7/9/2008 7:54:18 PM)
Agreed, Jack; once you've viewed the 90-second clip (which depicts no real "drama") what you will see is the Gilmore Gang's extreme paranoia and resulting rudeness.

But, then again, what did we expect?

MARK WARNER FOR U. S. SENATE!!

Thanks!

Steve
