I've heard from sources close to Dr. Keith Hummel, the Democratic Candidate in the 1st CD, that he will suspend his candidacy tomorrow because of past personal financial difficulties. Dr. Hummel was an excellent candidate and it will be interesting to see if there will be a replacement candidate... especially considering the fact that there is a Democratic Candidate in ever Congressional District for the first time in decades.  Some (unlikely) possible candidates include Senator Edd Houck (Fredericksburg) and Delegate Albert Pollard (Northern Neck).

I've heard about these financial issues as well (Chris Guy - 7/2/2008 10:23:52 PM)
from local Democrats. I've been waiting to hear back from someone close to the campaign to respond....and this news may be that response.

As for replacement candidates? Pollard has been in 2 campaigns already in the last year. Houck loves the position he's in with the State Senate right now.

The problem is, even if you recruit a great candidate...they're still heavy underdogs in this horribly gerrymandered "district." Houck would do in great in the Fredericksburg region, and get crushed in the Northern Neck and the Williamsburg area. Pollard and Wittman are both from the Northern Neck, so Albert's strength there would be canceled out.
