The Race for 2009 Endorsements is On

I've heard that many if not most Democratic Senators will probably end up endorsing their colleague Creigh Deeds, while many if not most Democratic Delegates will probably end up endorsing their colleague Brian Moran.  Thus, I'm not surprised to see Sen. Whipple sending out a fundraising letter/endorsement for Creigh Deeds:

I am supporting Creigh because of his distinguished record in the General Assembly, for his passion for the environment, because of his good heart and commitment to doing what is right, and because he has already shown he can win statewide.

[...]

It is all but certain that Attorney General Bob McDonnell will be the Republican nominee for Governor next year. Creigh proved to us in 2005-when he was our Democratic nominee-he could beat McDonnell by coming within just 360 votes out of more than 2 million cast. This despite having just half the resources of the Bush-Cheney funded Bob McDonnell. It was the closest statewide election in Virginia history!

We can't let the policies and politics of George W. Bush's Republican Party take control of state government here in Virginia. We must defeat Bob McDonnell, and I know that if we unite behind Creigh early, he will be successful next year.

Besides Sen. Whipple, I hear that Chap Petersen will be helping to host an event Monday night for Creigh with the Fairfax police and sheriff's unions. Also, Sen. Ralph Northam endorsed Creigh when he announced.

My understanding is that Brian Moran isn't really issuing lists of formal endorsements right now. However, his campaign points me to this event, including Delegates Kenny Alexander, Bobby Mathieson, Joe Bouchard, Ken Melvin, Algie Howell, Paula Miller, Lynwood Lewis, and Lionell Spruill, Sr.  They also point me to this event with Del. Margi Vanderhye and Fairfax County Supervisor John Foust.

Anyway, the race for 2009 endorsements appears to be on. It's fascinating to me how early the governor's race is gearing up this year.  On the other hand, I guess the primary's less than a year away, so maybe it's not that early considering how long campaigns drag go on for these days.

only interested in endorsements that are newsworthy (teacherken - 6/26/2008 4:51:19 PM)
a state senator endorsing Brian
a delegate endorsing Creigh
someone from NoVa who is not a state senator endorsing Creigh
someone from the Valley or SW who is not a delegate endorsing Brian

none of names listed for either side really should be considered a surprise at this point

fwiw - I am still neutral, and expect to stay that way for a while.  My wife is supporting Creigh, for what that's worth.

That really pretty much says it all at the point. (Silence Dogood - 6/26/2008 5:10:04 PM)

I'm neutral as well... (Lowell - 6/26/2008 5:12:04 PM)
...just think it's interesting how many people are jumping in already with endorsements.  My bet is that we'll be hearing a lot more after the transportation special session is over, sometime in...well, who knows when.

Good luck Creigh! (notwaltertejada - 6/26/2008 6:33:09 PM)
Glad to hear my Senator, Mary Margaret Whipple, endorse Deeds!
Creigh truly has the vision for what needs to happen concerning possibly our most pressing issue, the environment! This in addition to a host of other issues.
With Creigh as the nominee I think McDonell will end up like his ol' friend Fred Thompson.

Is Deeds really better on the environment? (legacyofmarshall - 6/27/2008 12:22:22 AM)
Convince me that he is and he has my vote.

I'm totally undecided.  I love them both and look forward to working hard for whomever gets the nomination but for now and presumably for almost a year to come I'm an undecided voter.

If indeed one campaign stresses a real, believable, passionate, and strong environmental platform, they will have my strong support.
