The Washington Post's Tim Craig recapped the 2008 Virginia Democratic Party Convention on WashingtonPost.com's Virginia Politics blog. Here are the headlines:

1) If the Democrats' goal was to leave the convention united behind Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), they still have a lot of work to do.
2) The Obama delegate selection process seemed like a mess.
3) Keep an eye on Glenn Nye.
4) Mark R. Warner is ready to take on Gilmore.
5) Sen. James Webb (D-Va.) makes a big showing.
6) Jon Bowerbank wins the sign war.
7) It's going to be hard for either Del. Brian J. Moran (D-Alexandria) or state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds (D-Bath) to break through this year.
8) Were they really 'fired up and ready to go?"

Keep an eye on No. 2 (lgb30856 - 6/16/2008 12:04:49 PM)
what happened? I had no idea how the vote went. If anyone did not get 50% there was to be a second ballot. But everyone left by 5 pm.
The voting should have been done earlier in the day.

The Clinton slates and Obama slates were both elected. (FxbAmy - 6/16/2008 12:42:03 PM)
The results of the vote were recorded before the end of the convention on Saturday.

Hope this helps.

That Is Incorrect....... (Flipper - 6/16/2008 12:44:12 PM)
The election of DNC and the At-Large elector positions require a majority vote, which is why there was a second vote on the At-Large elector positions.

There is no requirement for a majority vote for the At-Large delegate positions that were being elected by the Clinton and Obama delegations.  It works the same way it did at each of the district conventions that elected national delegates - top vote getters win.

did not know that. (lgb30856 - 6/16/2008 1:06:29 PM)
thanks, but I left at 6 pm and the Obama results were not in.

The Obama vote count ran until 8:30. (Randy Klear - 6/16/2008 2:23:37 PM)
There were 150+ candidates and up to 12 votes per ballot, plus 2 more votes for alternates from a subset of the delegate candidate list. Only one full slate filed, and since it didn't win an outright majority, the individual votes had to be tallied off each ballot.

I worked on counting from 5:30 to a little after 7:00. At that time everything was done except the 8th and 10th CDs. I'm not sure what the delays were there.

I'm afraid that point number one is correct.... (hcc in va - 6/16/2008 3:17:17 PM)
there is a long way to go before we have a totally "united" front, which, to me, means Hillary supporters deciding to vote in their best interest, and to stop saying, as at least one did to me, that she is "scared" of Obama, which I patiently explained to her was a racist code word.

Quick WaPo responses (Shawn - 6/16/2008 3:25:38 PM)
1) If the Democrats' goal was to leave the convention united behind Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), they still have a lot of work to do.
I did not meet even one Clinton supporter unwilling to vote for Barack Obama ... Virginia Democrats were united behind electing Obama for President and Mark Warner for Senate

2) The Obama delegate selection process seemed like a mess.
It certainly was ... but only because he has brought so many new people into the political process ... and the "insiders" played the game they knew ... and Tim Kaine is in control of the DPVA

3) Keep an eye on Glenn Nye.
...and all our congressional candidates

4) Mark R. Warner is ready to take on Gilmore.
LOL ... the only real question is will Mark Warner break 60%

5) Sen. James Webb (D-Va.) makes a big showing.
All he needed to do was be there to make the "big showing"
6) Jon Bowerbank wins the sign war.
What??? ... Mark Warner was the clear winner  hamptonroadsconventioncenter2008warnerSV400089

7) It's going to be hard for either Del. Brian J. Moran (D-Alexandria) or state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds (D-Bath) to break through this year.
OK ... they're running in 2009

8) Were they really 'fired up and ready to go?"
You bet!!!

Glenn Nye - If you can spare a dime (totallynext - 6/16/2008 4:33:03 PM)

He is dynamic and has a real shot @ taken the 2nd away from Thelma Drake

We need more than the 11th and the 10th this year.

Glenn Nye at the Convention Saturday (Mark - 6/16/2008 5:25:22 PM)

Glenn Nye was, in my opinion, one of the best speakers Saturday.

I just hope we now can be excited about (totallynext - 6/16/2008 4:34:35 PM)
our presumptive nominee - Barack Obama.

The convention was like walking on eggshells - lets get together and get this thing going in the right direction.
