Jerald ter Horst is 85 years young and now lives in North Carolina.  After service in the United States Marine Corps in both World War II and Korea, he began a noted career as a journalist.   In 1974,  ter Horst was appointed presidential press secretary by Gerald Ford when Ford advanced to the Presidency on Richard Nixon's resignation.

Jerald ter Horst served only one month and resigned immediately when Ford granted Nixon "a full, free and absolute pardon."

Part of ter Horst's resignation letter reads:

. . . I must inform you that I cannot in good conscience support your decision to pardon former President Nixon even before he has been charged with the commission of any crime.  As your spokesman, I do not know how I could credibly defend that action..."

In an interview yesterday by the Grand Rapids Press, Jerald ter Horst commented on the recent revelations by former Bush press secretary Scott McClellan.  McClellan reports that he discovered a number of troubling instances of dishonesty, deceit, treachery, propaganda, and other  chicaneries in the George W. Bush White House.

Jerald ter Horst comments:

"I think he waited too long to be truly credible.  Did his second thoughts occur only after he left the White House?"

Jerald ter Horst is a friend.  On my wall I have only one signed souvenir photograph of a notable personality. Thanks for the photo Jerry and best to you and yours. . . . C. W. Dean, June 4, 2008
