All You Need to Know about Virginia GOP

This is all you need to know about the Virginia GOP:

Vice President Dick Cheney is to be the featured speaker at a fundraiser for the Republican Party of Virginia.

Cheney will appear Friday night at the gathering of state GOP officials at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

That's right, good ol' torturing Dick is the featured speaker at the Virginia Republican Party's convention.  What more does anyone need to know about the RPV?

Well, how about this from Tom Davis?

"A convention restricts you to talk to 5,000 party activists where they ask you, 'OK, now if you're raped by an in-law and the mother's life was in danger, you would allow an abortion? Oh, well, you're not good enough for me.' That's what it comes down to. It's ridiculous."

Davis said the party's decision to have a nominating convention, instead of a more inclusive primary, is emblematic of its disconnect with the fastest-growing part of the state -- Northern Virginia -- and, by extension, moderate voters who are turned off by values-based politics.

"People aren't paying higher gas prices because somebody had an abortion or registered a gun," he said.

Yeah, as much as I hate to admit it, I've gotta agree with Tom Davis on this one.  Hey Tom, you want to be a guest blogger at RK? :)

Hah. (Silence Dogood - 5/29/2008 9:36:11 AM)
Yesterday Karl Rove accused Scott McClellan of sounding "like a liberal blogger," and he'd probably say the same thing about Tom Davis, too.  It'll be followed up by a statement from Dana Perino:

"Tom, we now know, feels disgruntled about his time in the Congress.  Those of us who knew Tom before, during and after his time as Congressman are puzzled and disappointed.  This is not the Tom we know."

Tom is right, give him a small break (Alter of Freedom - 5/29/2008 10:10:16 AM)
Many Virginia Democrats and Independents today were at a point in time either Republicans or ones that were registered Democrat but found themselves voiting more often for Republicans, especially at the federal level.

A big reason for the displacement is not due to the likes of Democratic politicians like Obama and others but many moderates are leaving the VA GOP becuase of exactly what Davis express. If you are not an ultra-social conservative you have little chance outside of a primary because a convention is embedded with those evangelical right wingers, far right that is.

I venture to say that pro-choice, limited government, pro-human rights(thats gay rights folks) would never make it in that situation. Whther we agree with the politics or not Davis certainly I think would have proven just how bad a candidate Gilmore is in a Primary. Now the GOP gets to have it happen against Warner.

A big part of me is tempted to endorse a Democratic federal system just so we can see these social-conservative Republicans fall by the wayside and actaully see the real Republicans and the ones that left for the Libertarians and Democrat camps return home. I know that will not sit well with the many who would rather keep the Republicans down but to have two Party system you need two Parties.

Right now we have one and a half.

Its always been 1.5 (citizenindy - 5/29/2008 10:42:37 AM)
The Democrats will win in the fall.  Get drunk off their power move too far to the left and the moderates will swing back to the Republican party where the Repulicans will get drunk off their power

Rinse cycle repeat

Honestly its time for a democratic president again

I am more concerned about the state level.  Having a true liberal Moran as governor makes Kaine look tolerable which is truely scary

Thanks for the Notice Lowell (mmc0412 - 5/29/2008 12:55:47 PM)
Thanks for letting me know I should leave Richmond Friday night!  I don't want to be anywhere near that Convention Center.

Agreed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (norman swingvoter - 5/29/2008 6:51:31 PM)
Now do you spell "torment"? Me in a room with cheney and a bunch of far right neonuts having a feeding frenzy. I'm staying away from downtown tomorrow.

DPVA statement (Lowell - 5/30/2008 3:22:44 PM)

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS!

WITH DICK CHENEY AS THEIR GUIDE, VIRGINIA REPUBLICAN LEADERS DEMONSTRATE THEIR LOYALTY TO BUSH ADMINISTRATION POLICIES AND PARTY OVER THE INTERESTS OF WORKING FAMILIES

Richmond- Tonight, the Republican Party of Virginia will proudly parade about with Vice President Dick Cheney as their keynote speaker at the Commonwealth Gala during the 2008 Virginia Republican State Convention.

Since Cheney is the architect of the Bush agenda that has provided so little progress for working families, it's really no surprise that he would be the policy guide for the party that is determined to turn back the clock on the progress we have made here in Virginia.

At the dinner, Vice President Cheney will join:

   * US Senate candidate and former Governor Jim Gilmore, who left the Commonwealth in financial shambles,
   * US Senate candidate, Del. Bob Marshall, a legislative gadfly whose latest crusade would allow concealed weapons onto school campuses,
   * Attorney General Bob McDonnell and Lt. Governor Bill Bolling, neither of whom has any plan for how we fix Virginia's transportation problems but have plenty of criticism for Gov. Tim Kaine's efforts to find a solution,
   * And Sen. Ken Cuccinelli, who is more interested in what happens in Virginians' bedrooms than what happens on their highways.

Each of these unabashed members of the extremist, out of touch, far right-wing, from Cheney to Cuccinelli, have continually and consistently used their positions of power to put their party before progress, and partisan rhetoric before the people.

When our nation and our Commonwealth have needed practical solutions, each of these Republicans have opposed progress at every level.
