On Memorial Day, McCain Attacks Webb's GI Bill

Well, isn't this just wonderful:

Sen. John McCain asserted that the G.I. Bill sponsored by Virginia Sen. James Webb will drive soldiers out of the armed services at a time when the country is trying to expand the size of the military.

[...]

... McCain insisted that he takes "a backseat to no one in my affection, respect and devotion to veterans." And he predicted that Webb's bill would reduce the military's retention rate by 16 percent.

"Encouraging people to choose to not become noncommissioned officers would hurt the military and our country very badly," he said.

Supporting the troops would "hurt...our country very badly?"  Yeah, and if you believe that one...

Sadly, McCain is completely wrong on this issue, just as he is on so many other issues now that he's obsessed with his last chance to be president.  The fact is, Senators John Warner and Jim Webb just a few days ago explained why the GI Bill will not "reduce the military's retention rate" or do any of the other bad things John McCain erroneously claims.  The question is, what does John McCain know about the GI Bill -- which passed the Senate on Thursday by a veto-proof 75-22 margin -- that all those other Senators, including Warner and Webb, don't know?

Lieberman & Graham, McCain's biggest supporters in the Senate, are serving on the Policy Board of Advisors for an Anti-Obama 527.

McCain is is ethically and morally corrupt.

What is up with this?

Interesting video (Teddy - 5/27/2008 12:19:41 PM)
in many ways. (Watch the faces and the action going on in the background while McCain bloviates).

As for "trusting" statements by Petreus that coincide with something McCain believes Osama bin Laden said, I ask you to recall how intelligence analysts have interepreted how cannily Osama has out-psyched Bush and the Americans in the past, pushing all our buttons to motivate America into doing exactly what he wants. McC is dealing with raw data, not intelligence here. Remember when Osama came out with his approval of Kerry, CIA's opinion was that Osama gave a "gift" to Bush, because Osama wanted Bush to win the election and fight on in Iraq. Same thing now: Osama wants America to continue blundering around in Iraq so he can recruit more jihadists and inflame the Muslim world against us. Actually, Al Qaeda in Iraq is almost eliminated, thanks to the Sunni tribes having turned against them, according to reports from tactical level officers. Petreus is a sychophant, and tells Bush what he wants to hear.

Thank you Senator McCain. (Pain - 5/26/2008 8:17:31 PM)
I always knew Senator Graham was nut job and republican boot-licker, from all his appearances on the Sunday talk shows, but it's good to see John McCain is, too.

I feel better seeing this.

Man, every time I see him tout his war experience from now on, I'll get a little nauseous.  Although as Matt Yglesias pointed out, whenever he's been given the choice, McCain always picks the cheaper, skimpier Vet's Plan.  And when there's only one plan on the table, he tends to vote against it.

Still, it's just sickening that a veteran would vote to screw other veterans.

to repeat what my friend Mark Kleiman just posted elsewhere (teacherken - 5/27/2008 12:13:32 PM)
it ain't okay for Webb to offer college education for people after one elistment but it's fine for Blackwater to entice them away as mercenaries?   Hmmmm....

Exactly (Teddy - 5/27/2008 12:22:11 PM)
Our privatization and outsourcing of war continue apace. Also, not paying for war continues as we borrow from our enemies to finance the war with debt which our grandkids can pay off. Maybe payoff.
