Jim Webb on David Letterman Show

"The big surprise really was the way that money drives politics."

"We did it, we won, we brought a Democratic majority to the Senate, and we're gonna keep working for the people."

"I never thought I'd run for office...growing more frustrated from watching the invasion of Iraq...watching the horrible mismanagement after Hurricane Katrina, the lack of leadership, I finally decided that I would step forward and take the hits and see if we can't come and do something about these things."

"My view is we made two very serious strategic blunders here....we've lost our strategic focus around the world."

What a Guy! (Elaine in Roanoke - 5/23/2008 9:25:05 AM)
Thanks, Lowell, for posting that video. I missed it last night and really enjoyed seeing Jim Webb on Letterman. It's been wonderful for me to watch Jim Webb grow so at ease in his role as a public figure and politician...a far cry from the shy man I first met at a Roanoke County event early in the senatorial campaign. Recently, when Sen. Webb was speaking at Roanoke College and then so effectively working the crowd afterwards, I saw just how much of a quick study he is politically.

Incidentally, I also met his driver Mac several times during the campaign, the one Sen. Webb talks about on the show. His relationship with Jim Webb and his respect for him are things that first showed me how genuine a man and how fine a leader Webb is.

I have read several of his novels and "Born Fighting," and now am working through "A Time to Fight." He is a brilliant writer. (I enjoyed "The Emperor's General" the most.)

Now...if we can just get that REAL "Dream Ticket": Obama-Webb 08!

Reiterates Why Obama Needs Webb (Matt H - 5/23/2008 9:50:47 AM)
Webb's clear pre-Iraq, anti-invasion position fits perfectly with Obama's.  Why muddy this important issue by adding Clinton to the ticket?  Let her and "Bomb Iran-McCain" go off into the sunset.

Obama/Webb '08!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the Video Clip (TMSKI - 5/23/2008 10:41:15 AM)
Lowell .... been searching the web for this.

Makes the whole Draft James Webb effort ... more than WORTHWHILE.

I think you're looking at our next Vice President .... put Jim Webb at the TOP of Obama's very short list. His philosophy and message of affirmative leadership fits hand to glove with Obama's Change We Can Believe In.

But will Jim take on the challenge ?  If Barrack Obama handles this test / negotiation well.... the answer will be YES!

Wow! (jasonVA - 5/23/2008 2:28:53 PM)
Thanks for posting that.  I have never been more active with my political support than I was for Jim Webb.  And I have never been more satisfied with a politician I've supported than I am now with Jim Webb.  We elected something more than a politician - I am so very proud of him.

btw Its really nice to hear him discussed as a possible VP, but I would really hate to lose him as our senator.  I think he has been a very important voice in the senate.

Jim Webb (TMSKI - 5/23/2008 4:44:52 PM)
... was a statesman in waiting a year and a half ago. Now he's an accomplished Senator (the GI Bill just passed) and a new Democratic party leader.

Authentic ... Honest and very Intelligent - Worldly. He makes us PROUD!!

Jim Webb's the real deal (Catzmaw - 5/23/2008 9:01:50 PM)
I don't care what others say about his alleged problems with women and his supposed problems with the temper and all that.  He is the real deal and I'd follow this man - follow him because I have never witnessed any other politician with his courage or social historian with his finger on the pulse - he is a genuine article.  I don't have to agree with him about everything.  All I know is that he's got the courage of his convictions and the brains to push through his ideas and he is what this country sorely needs for a straight talking, straight-shooting truth-teller.  He's the kid who tells us the Emperor has no clothes.  We need him because truth is his guide and he will not be moved from telling it as he sees it, and if we want to accomplish anything in this country we will have to face some hard truths and accept some existing realities.  He gets my support because he calls 'em like he sees 'em and doesn't hold back.  I'd like to buy him a beer.

If I know Jim Webb.... (Lowell - 5/23/2008 9:04:11 PM)
he'd definitely accept the beer! :)

a great Webb for VP piece ... (j_wyatt - 5/23/2008 9:11:16 PM)
There's been a bunch of well articulated articles these last few days, but here's a new one that is particularly good:

Beer! The great equalizer, or enabler, or whatever (Catzmaw - 5/24/2008 12:17:20 AM)
all I know is, it's a great beverage whichever way you pour it.  Wine, too.  Wine gets my vote as a perfectly acceptable beverage.

The Bear joke (Dan - 5/25/2008 12:09:02 PM)
The joke about dancing with the bear, you can't stop dancing until the bear stops dancing, is hilarious!  That is one of most true and poignant jokes told by a politician that I can remember.  Too bad Jim didn't credit Lowell!

I didn't come up with that joke. (Lowell - 5/25/2008 12:23:06 PM)
Wish I had, it's a good one! :)

So what's a Navy Cross? (thegools - 5/27/2008 2:48:02 PM)
Webb- "It's a combat award."

Priceless.
