Rising Sea Levels to Swallow Tangier and Smith Islands?

A new report details the threats to Virginia from rising sea levels triggered by global warming:
The report predicts serious losses of land on Tangier and Smith Islands within decades and predicts little will be left of them by 2100 if expected sea level increases of two feet are realized.

The group also forecast rising water in the Hampton Roads region could claim 20 percent of the area's undeveloped lands and 80 percent of its ocean beaches.

The report from the National Wildlife Federation (full disclosure: employer of The Green Miles) comes just two weeks before the U.S. Senate is due to take up the Climate Security Act, co-sponsored by Sen. John Warner. It's still not clear how Sen. Jim Webb intends to vote. Contact Sen. Webb right now to urge him to strengthen and pass this landmark climate legislation!

We can't just expect his support? (tx2vadem - 5/22/2008 9:34:17 PM)

Traget date 2100 but we need a clear vision to be undertaken (Alter of Freedom - 5/22/2008 10:35:38 PM)
I have not always seen eye to eye with Larry Schweiger and some of the computer models used in determing some of the calls made with regard to global warming by NWF and though there is some debate over "rapidly rising sea levels" and the extent of such until the outlined target date of 2100 certainly some action needs to be undertaken on both national and state levels. I believe this area was one of the bills before Congress that unforutnately Obama chose not to vote--at least it was one that contribute negatively to the future of the bay that is.
While the debate over how fast the sea will rise and whether the islands will be "swallowed" we cannot ignore that land management must be a priority as well as the rising amounts of pollution run off that I feel is impacting more of our natural surroundings than current global warming scenarios. Fish kills and the like in our tributaries are only the beginning and the next will be rising phospohorous levels in our water quality.
I tend to see many of Laura Hickey's points but would like to see more voluntary caps over ones under the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act.
Chicago Climate Exchange data could be that model.

Great cheap shot at Obama (TheGreenMiles - 5/23/2008 9:31:33 AM)
I think there was this vote about this bill one time and I forget what it was about but I'm pretty sure Obama skipped it.

If only you spent as much time researching your comments as you do complaining about getting troll rated.

Cheap shot? He didn't vote (Alter of Freedom - 5/24/2008 12:55:17 AM)
There is accountability and then obviously there is your kind of accountability. You are very passionate about attacking Dominion Power and its employees and Gov. Kaine for supporting coal and yet (and for the record how I am supposed to know that Obama is your guy  by the way) its a cheap shot to point out he skipped a vote that impacted the Bay, drilling and land management.
This frankly is why you continually alienate and push away moderates. On the one hand you want the movement to reach greater penetration but fail to acknowledge it when someone you support fails to step up when given the chance.
Fact is Obama did not vote...you research it.
As to my research, is not Larry head of the NWF? Is not Laura an advocate? Is not the Climate Security Act sp[onsored by Lieberman and Warner? Is not the Chicago Climate Model acceptable? MY research and facts seem pretty accurate there Green MIles.
If you want us to support with our money and contribute to the environmental movement how about start holding everyopne accountability for change and not just the ones you do not support.
You research Obama's record and find out why he felt it appropriate to not cast a vote...seeing how he is your guy apparently why would you find it acceptable for him not to vote on your behalf in the matter?
And by the way , everytime you troll me I look at as a compliment frankly because the fact speaks for themselves--cheap shot or not he chose not to vote on something very important to many of us. Is it not important to you?

Movie about Smith Island (divingthewreck - 5/23/2008 2:29:31 PM)
This is CCAN's documentary, "We Are All Smith Islanders," which shows the effects of sea level rise on this Chesapeake community.  Enjoy!

Just a follow up (Alter of Freedom - 5/24/2008 1:27:08 AM)
The bill in which Barack Obama opted not to vote on was:
Offshore Drilling in Virginia  (yeah I could see how you could forget that one Green Miles)
And just to follow up on the point Obama NO Voted the following:
Energy Act 2007
Energy Tax Credit Amendment
Housing BIll with Energy Tax Credit Extensions
Water Resources Dev. Act 2007
The Farm Bill (2419)

You can troll me all you want but if you were really serious you would want to know why it is Obama opted not to vote what I believe would be in your interest.
If we are going to get serious about global warming, climate change and energy independence its time we hold ALL politicians accountable.
Leaders take stands on issues Green Miles.
