Thanks to Sen. Robert Byrd for the his endorsement of Barack Obama.

After a great deal of thought, consideration and prayer over the situation in Iraq, I have decided that, as a superdelegate to the Democratic National Convention, I will cast my vote for Senator Barack Obama for President. Both Senators Clinton and Obama are extraordinary individuals, whose integrity, honor, love for this country and strong belief in our Constitution I deeply respect.

I believe that Barack Obama is a shining young statesman, who possesses the personal temperament and courage necessary to extricate our country from this costly misadventure in Iraq, and to lead our nation at this challenging time in history. Barack Obama is a noble-hearted patriot and humble Christian, and he has my full faith and support.

Excellent...great endorsement by Sen. Byrd, and one step closer to the nomination -- and the White House -- for Barack Obama!

The racial implecations are historic (DanG - 5/19/2008 3:11:14 PM)
a former KKK member endorsing the first African-American candidate with a legitimate chance to be President.  Astounding.

Also, the fact that Byrd called Obama (Lowell - 5/19/2008 3:14:49 PM)
a "humble Christian" is very significant in fighting off all the insane rumors, innuendos, etc. floating around the internet's slimier quarters (not to mention Fox "News," Rush, etc.).

can't wait for Denver.. (lgb30856 - 5/19/2008 4:55:47 PM)

I have loved that man ever since he had the guts to stand up and say he thought Clarence Thomas was lying during the Anita Hill mess.

Lowell I believe the Rail Industry just hit all time Highs today on Wall Street.
The biggest gainer and strength in terms of tonage has been coal according to industry experts. Byrd seems to have been able to garner support from the regions known for coal-related industries but Obama was not. I wonder if this endorsement should have come out a month ago.

Bridging a big gap (Kindler - 5/19/2008 10:21:49 PM)
Obama has some interesting passages on Sen. Byrd in The Audacity of Hope, particularly this one on one of their first meetings:
"Oh, I have been very fortunate," [Sen. Byrd] said, nodding to himself.  "Much to be thankful for.  There's not much I wouldn't do over."  Suddenly he paused and looked squarely into my eyes. "I only have one regret, you know.  The foolishness of youth..."

We sat there for a moment, considering the gap of years and experience between us.

"We all have regrets, Senator," I said finally. "We just ask that, in the end, God's grace shines upon us."

Nice to see that "gap of years and experience" being bridged in this way.  There's hope for this country yet.
