Introducing the Hope First Slate

Like you, we are Democrats strongly committed to electing Senator Barack Obama. We have come together from across the first district to form the Hope First Slate. Each of us is proud to be endorsed by Senator Obama and the Obama for America campaign. We are writing to ask that you stand with Senator Obama and support our election in Williamsburg.

Why we support Barack Obama

Barack Obama won the Democratic nomination because his message of hope and change resonated with all Americans. His Presidency offers an opportunity to shut the door on the division
and gridlock of the Bush years, a chance to heal the country after a devastating war in Iraq and a
partisan war in Washington, a real chance to bring back economic fairness and social justice.

Why Barack Obama supports us

The Obama campaign endorsed our group and encourages you to send the Hope First Slate to the
Democratic National Convention in August.  Sen. John Miller, Ron Freeman, Rebecca Jaramillo
McCullough, and Amy LaMarca's Hope First Slate represents Sen. Obama's broad support and celebrates
the richness and diversity of the First District.

Senator John C. Miller
Male Delegate

Senator Miller was elected to the Virginia Senate in 2007 and his win has been credited with turning
the State Senate blue. Senator Miller has been a key legislator in the new Democratic majority,
focusing on improving education and transportation.  He spent 18 years at WVEC-TV reporting on
the issues facing Hampton Roads. For six years he worked on the problems of Virginia and the
nation in the United States Senate. John served as Vice President Christopher Newport University
for five years, where he now serves as Associate Director of The Virginia Electronic Commerce
Technology Center at CNU, which teaches small businesses and non-profits about electronic
commerce. Senator Miller is currently the Vice Chair of the First CD Committee.

Rebecca Jaramillo McCullough
Female Delegate

An Air Force Brat and former State Department wife, Rebecca had the harrowing experience of being evacuated with her children from the Embassy in Islamabad after 9/11. Her first hand experience with the failed Bush foreign policy spurred her involvement with the Democratic Party. A current member of the Fauquier committee, Rebecca has been a key volunteer for John Kerry, the O'Donnell for Congress and Day for Delegate campaigns, and numerous other congressional campaigns. She co-founded the Fauquier for Obama group, and has worked in OH, TX, PA, NC, and WV.  Her family's support of Senator Obama is multi-generational and spans three continents- her parents serve as 1st CD delegates, her son and daughter in Ghana and CT, and their father serving in Iraq. Rebecca represents the Hispanic and Native American constituencies.

Ronald Freeman
Male Alternate

From his college days at Howard University and early membership in the 46th Ward,  Philadelphia Democratic Committee, to Spotsylvania County today, Ron has truly been a lifelong Democratic activist. Each election day, Ron volunteers his time and professional services as an attorney, protecting voter's rights.  He is an active member of the Spotsylvania Democratic Committee and the First CD Committee, serving currently as Counsel and previously as Precinct Operations Chair. Ron is a firm believer in party loyalty, discipline, and unity. Ron represents the African American constituency.

Amy LaMarca
Female Delegate

Currently serving as Chair of the Fredericksburg Democratic Committee, Amy endorsed Senator Obama as part of the Women for Obama group in Virginia, and has coordinated with Obama for America on convention issues. Amy was an integral part of the local chairs group urging uncommitted Virginia super delegates to endorse Senator Obama. She has previously been involved with candidate advocacy and campaigns. In 2007, Amy was Political Director for Carlos Del Toro, candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates. She worked regionally with the Webb for Senate and Kaine for Governor Campaigns. Amy is a member of the DPVA Women's Caucus, and the Democratic Latino Organization of Virginia.

We hope to join Governor Kaine in Denver, representing you and your commitment to Barack Obama.

We respectfully ask for your vote at the First CD Convention.  Please vote Hope First!

Regards,

Senator John Miller   Rebecca Jaramillo McCullough      Ronald Freeman      Amy LaMarca
