Mark Warner on Mountaintop Removal

I am looking forward to Mark Warner being in the Senate as much as the next guy. But recently I was able to ask him if he would "support or oppose mountaintop removal mining" in the Senate.

His (disappointing) answer?:

We haven't done much of it here in Virginia.

The more candidates talk about "carbon capture and sequestration," clean coal, IGCC, or coal to liquid fuel, the more Virginia mountains we are likely to see destroyed by mountaintop removal.

Governor Warner knows this, and I hope he will develop a better answer on what he plans to do to stop mountaintop removal once he gets that Senate seat.

mining?  Huh?  Are you sure he understood the question correctly?

I'm afraid so (faithfull - 5/12/2008 9:25:46 AM)
He took the words right out of Rick Boucher's mouth.

Boucher told us two years ago that there wasnt ANY mountaintop removal mining in Virginia, and he still defends the practice with everything he's got.

I hope Governor Warner gets to see Wise County from the air. I think that might help change his perception.
