Friends of the Earth Endorses Obama, Cites "Sham" Gas Tax Idea as #1 Reason

Good for Friends of the Earth, I'm really glad to see this:

We endorse Senator Obama because we believe he is the best candidate for the environment," said Friends of the Earth Action President Brent Blackwelder. "The 'gas tax holiday' debate is a defining moment in the presidential race. The two other candidates responded with sham solutions that won't ease pain at the pump, but Senator Obama refused to play that typical Washington game. Instead, Obama called for real solutions that would make transportation more affordable and curb global warming. He showed the courage and candor we expect from a president.

By the way, Friends of the Earth Action had previously endorsed John Edwards and is now switching its support to Barack Obama.

P.S. Meanwhile, many of the leading economists in America have issued an "Open Statement Opposing Proposals for a Gas Tax Holiday."

P.P.S. Also, check out what Chris Bowers has to say.

The right choice at the right time (Kindler - 5/3/2008 7:38:00 PM)
While I've disagreed with FOE on their opposition to any climate change legislation that has a chance to pass today, I totally support them on this endorsement.  I just sent a donation to the Obama campaign for the same reason.

We cannot afford demagoguery on energy issues anymore.  We need leaders who can teach us and trust us to do the right thing.

Excellent Statement (Eric - 5/4/2008 9:53:07 AM)
In and of itself the gas tax holiday is not a defining moment (IMO), but the fact that two of the candidates will so easily and so pointlessly pander on such a matter speaks volumes about a lack of true leadership in this area.  Unfortunately for those candidates such pointless pandering is likely not limited to just this issue.  They've shown their "leadership" cards and they've got a losing hand.
