Onward Christian Terrorist

For those that missed the Hampton Roads section yesterday in the Virginian-Pilot there was a long piece on Don Spitz, the Chesapeake "Reverend" who spends his time picketing women's clinics that provide abortions and supporting terrorists like Eric Rudolph and Paul Hill.
The online comment section has been ablaze with those who can't believe the paper gave such extremism a platform and attempted to humanize him by telling us what kinds of TV programs he likes to watch.  I don't know though, I think the article provided more information and insight into his delusions and warped sense of religion more than witnessing his deranged public displays ever could.

I mean, did the writer note the irony as he reported:

"They have nothing to fear from him," said John Brockhoeft, who has known Spitz for 10 years. "He has never used any kind of violence. He's a peaceful protester. They don't like him because he sheds light on wickedness."

Brockhoeft was convicted of firebombing a Cincinnati clinic in 1985 and again in 1988 after he was caught in Florida with bomb parts. He served two separate prison sentences totaling nearly seven years."

And if you want to get on any government watch list, head over to the website that Spitz maintains which incites and compels those of already limited mental capabilities to commit violence by making martyrs of animals like Paul Hill, James Kopp, and even felon (and previously quoted admirer) John Brockhoeft.  Like other fundamentalists he believes birth control is evil and has a page dedicated to promoting such medically inaccurate nonsense - which is actually pretty tame compared to the rest of the site.  Another page gives advice on how to deal with "Officer Friendly," saying that police officers "...are the babykillers protectors."  But perhaps the most heinous and vicious aspect of his site is his support of and link to the site that attempts to intimidate those who support abortion rights by displaying their names and, in some cases, pictures.  I know at least two of the people on the notorious "Nuremburg Files" - owners or supporters of clinics who provide abortions services.  The site was created by Neal Horsley, the violent and unstable fanatic featured in the HBO documentary Soldiers in the Army of God.  Before the site removed some more the more detailed information by court order, it read like an assassin's grocery list - with names, addresses, characteristics, and even spouse and children's names.  Oh, and the final touch - some of the names have lines through them.  Which names?  The ones of providers like New York physician Dr. Barnett Slepian, who was killed by sniper James Kopp.

Perhaps the most ironic feature to the whole perverse lunacy of the likes of Spitz and Horsley is their pathetic attempt to cloak themselves in religion and somehow pretend to be doing God's work.  Funny thing though, their whole paradigm resembles the traditional definition of terrorism much more than it bears any semblance to a holistic God or any sort of spirituality.

I'm so sorry for all the hatred and harm this particular man has spread with his type of "preaching."  Don't for a second think these types limit their attacks to reproductive healthcare issues.  Rudolph's reasoning for his four bombings in Georgia and Alabama was not only because of legalized abortion, but also because of "abberant sexual behavior."  Spitz and the rest of his ilk hate and provoke violence towards homosexuals with the same vengence.

I think one of the online commenters at the bottom of the article put it best, "Praise the Lord and pass the hate."
