Quote of the Day: Corey Stewart

From today's Washington Post:

"The resolution is clearly working," said Corey A. Stewart (R-At Large), chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors. "It is driving down the non-English-speaking portion of the schools and saving us millions of dollars. They're going to other jurisdictions and costing them money."

Wait a minute, "driving down the non-English-speaking portion of the schools?"  I thought this was about "rule of law" and "legal vs. illegal," not about what language people speak (whether the person is in the country "legally" or "illegally").  Now we hear from the horse's mouth what it's really about: "driving down the non-English-speaking portion of the schools."

Nice.

Just like Tancredo (Craig - 4/28/2008 12:16:25 PM)
In a few unguarded moments Tancredo has pretty much said the same thing.  Just dropped the pretense of "illegal" entirely and basically said it was about keeping those Spanish-speakers out.  Called it a "clash of civilizations." or something.  He denied it later, of course, but the fact is this movoement has always been more about the immigration itself than whether it's legal or not.

Corey Steward, racist (Hugo Estrada - 4/28/2008 12:45:12 PM)
Yes, these types have a whole routine: they claim that they are just about "law and order", behave offended when people call them racists, only to have Freudian slips galore which show what their true intentions are.

Is Corey Steward a racist? Given that I cannot look into his heart, I don't know if he truly is nor not.

However, his actions appeal to those who are racist, and now he is starting to make more and more racists statements to justify what is really an outrageously expensive and flawed policy which is hurting PWC.

This has, is, and always will be about Corey. (Barbara - 4/28/2008 12:25:28 PM)
He continues to judge his success based on how often his name is in the paper--bonus points for Wash Post front page, double bonus points for picture, triple points for an editorial.  Inviting thousands for another spectacle at the BOCS meeting tomorrow afternoon designed to put him on the evening news proves that.

Corey and the Budget (blue doggette - 4/28/2008 12:35:45 PM)
Corey Stewart is clueless about the county budget and the school board budget.  He somehow feels that the impact of number of ESOL students is a linear regression.   Such is not the case.

Approximately 1500 new ESOL students were registered or placed in ESOL classes during summer 2007.  Most of them were probably kindergarten students.  Net gain 1500 students.  During the school year supposedly 800 left the program.  Let's assume they moved although some possibly were removed from the program because they no longer required services.  There is still a net gain of approximately 700 students from school year 2006-2007 to school year 2007-2008.

Teachers are under contract and the various costs of running a school remains nearly constant unless all of the nearly 800 ESOL students left from the same school.  Where he gets the $6 million dollar figure is just beyond me.  Wishful thinking perhaps or perhaps his pupppetmaster told him to say that.

And then they question why the SPLC labels his friend "nativists" (TurnPWBlue - 4/28/2008 12:51:56 PM)
I'm sure the spin on this will be that his quote was misinterpreted.  There has been a max exodus of ESOL students from PWC schools (and an almost 1 to 1 correlation in new ESOL students in surrounding counties (primarily Fairfax).

What gets me in addition to the nativist undertones of Stewart's remarks is the complete lack of regional focus and collegiality.  You can almost hear the glea in his voice when he says, in essence, "Hey, they're not our problem any more.  They're yours.  Nah-nah-na-nah-nah!"  Could you imagine his response if Fairfax County pulled a similar stunt (say, shutting off the water that flows from the Fairfax County Water Authority to the Prince William County Service Authority or pulling out of the arrangement that allows PWC students to attend Thomas Jefferson or even if the immigration situation was reversed and Fairfax had the resolution not PWC)?

But what more can we expect from the self-proclaimed pre-eminent Republican in Northern Virginia?

Couldn't he at least try (Silence Dogood - 4/28/2008 1:08:30 PM)
to make it sound like he's not talking about ethnic cleansing?

Corey Stewart praises Help Save Manassas (Lowell - 4/28/2008 3:20:52 PM)

Pretty good guidance (Teddy - 4/28/2008 4:02:36 PM)
from Mr. Stewart for organizing any grassroots advocacy group, don't you think? Makes one wonder how much, ah, cross-fertilization there was from Corey to the supposedly spontaneous group, Help Save Manassas.

I hope the sensible adults in nearby counties are paying attention.

what this post fails to mention... (notwaltertejada - 4/28/2008 4:03:20 PM)
is that the migration of migrants back to south arlington, fairfax, and alexandria will save the county at least 6 million dollars per year in county school costs. no, that money is not available to the county right this moment. once that savings is redirected from the school budget this initiative will more than pay for itself.

Uh yeah, I hear euthanasia's a real money-saver too... (Kindler - 4/28/2008 9:23:16 PM)

The most dangerous politician in Virginia (Kindler - 4/28/2008 9:40:29 PM)
This guy is bringing the ugliest kind of politics back to our state (from the good ol' days of "massive resistance").  It is basically a kinder, gentler form of ethnic cleansing, without the death squads, etc.  Could you imagine if he became a statewide official?  The thought makes me shudder.

I'm here in the U.S. as a third-generation citizen because some bigwigs in Russia 100 years ago decided it was time to "drive down" the Jewish portion of their population.
And all I have to say is -- Never again.

brain drain (JimL - 4/29/2008 11:02:30 AM)
Stewart's "logic" is evidence that the flight of Latinos from PW county has resulted in a brain drain....
