Non-Political Open Thread: What Are You Doing This Weekend?

This is an open thread to talk about what you're doing this weekend.  I had a chance to catch a comedy show at the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse with the very funny Nick Thune (see video above; it's almost exactly one of the skits from last night). Today, among other things, I'm going to try and finish the biography of LBJ I've been reading (Lone Star Rising by Robert Dallek).  Oh wait, I said this was a non-political open thread, does a bio of LBJ -- one of the greatest political operators of all time -- count as "political?"  Hmmmm...

Dealing with termites (code - 4/26/2008 11:33:17 AM)
First warm morning of the year, and I've got a termite swarm coming out of my house.

Anyone have any suggestions? Good recommendations on pest control companies?

Oh, also...

been there, done that (Bubby - 4/26/2008 12:14:30 PM)
Your house is loaded, that's why they are swarming. Hopefully they are swarming to the outside, not the inside (as they did at our house).  The exterminator is going to want to drill your walls and load them with poison. You are going to hesitate.  Don't. You have to kill them all or this will happen again.  You may want to pick your poison - one that will cause the least lifetime risk of cancer. There will be a residual pesticide odor.

In our case the nests were inside the block walls of our basement. We opened all of the basement windows and went camping for three days.

Tell the neighbors.  Within a few years they will spread through the area and it is better to simply poison the soil around the house.  Which reminds me, don't grow vegetables next to your house, chances are the soil has been poisoned with some very potent chemicals (since discontinued for termite control).

Good luck.

The only problemwith camping... (KathyinBlacksburg - 4/26/2008 1:06:44 PM)
is that the last time I camped, there was so much pesticide sprayed --every day--in the Maine state park I was in (mosquito prevention) that I wondered if I wouldn't be better off at home.  Of course, given your circumstances, you probably did the best thing.

To your suggestions, Bubby, I would add to be sure to check with your Cooperative Extension.  They give good advice for deciding which approach to take.  And talking with them about any pest problem gives you info for when to deal with a problem yourself or not.

South Arlington Kiwanis Auction (Ingrid - 4/26/2008 11:58:09 AM)
I am attending the SA Kiwanis Annual Auction tonight at Lyon Village Community House (corner N. Fillmore and N. Pershing).  Like I did the past three years, I will act as the "celebrity auctioneer". Should be fun!

This weekend (TheGreenMiles - 4/26/2008 12:02:52 PM)
Chillin' and enjoying the nice weather then a wine and cheese for Karla Hagan today, going to the Wizards playoff game tomorrow

Performing weddings - tis the season (Catzmaw - 4/26/2008 12:45:00 PM)
My only complaint is I have to get all dressed up and behave myself, but there are few things more interesting than meeting people and having a chance to help launch them on their lives together.  Today I met a lovely couple from Taiwan, and a young military couple.  Later on I can go home and watch my sky high grass keep growing because it will probably be raining.

Pretty standard plans (DanG - 4/26/2008 1:41:07 PM)
Beer-olympics Friday night.
Friend's birthday party Saturday night.
Going to pick up litter at the park Sunday afternoon.

All the while finding time to do homework.

Thus is college.

Papers (Ambivalent Mumblings - 4/26/2008 3:41:19 PM)
Working on all the term papers that are due in the next week and continuing to point out to myself that I'll be done this summer.

Nats vs Cubs (hereinva - 4/26/2008 5:07:18 PM)
We may make it through the 1st or 2nd inning before the rain douses Nats stadium..but enough time to eat hotdogs, peanuts and some cool beverages.

GIS Training (elevandoski - 4/26/2008 5:45:25 PM)
Just got home from Richmond following an all day GIS Training in Richmond sponsored by the Sierra Club.  The stuff is SOOOOOO cool!!! It's gonna be a great tool for us in the conservation "industry".

canvassing for a city council candidate (martha - 4/26/2008 6:51:40 PM)
Nat Marshall: endorsed by the Lynchburg Dems, Voter's League and Lynchburg Education Assn. Running against LU/Falwell guy Jeff Helgeson who stated the other night in a debate that there is no scientific proof that evolution is correct and believes that creationism should be taught in schools.  Believes that a mother who home schools her children and whose kids have never attended public school should be a candidate for school board over a former spokesperson for the City Schools . Loves the busy, traffic heavy Wards Rd.area and all things prefabricated ( like LU) and thinks $$$$ put into downtown re-vitalization is wasted.Anything historic, well it'sold and should be forgotten.

Nat: great guy! Sits on the Board of Trustees of Lynchburg College and the State Board of Community Colleges. Big Brother-Big Sister Man of the Year! United Way, Workforce Investment Board member. On and on!

Sad thing is his opponent may win. Another good canididate defeated by a KOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

missed the non-political part...sorry! (martha - 4/26/2008 6:53:09 PM)
ooooops!!!!

No worries. (Lowell - 4/26/2008 7:38:18 PM)
It was just a suggestion...this is an open thread for your blogging pleasure! :)

Relaxing ... and some new tunes (Ron1 - 4/26/2008 10:58:22 PM)
Did find time, between job hunting, to spend an hour listening to some new music. James McMurtry has a rocking and searing new album out that blew me away. [We discussed him on a thread some time back, he's the Texas artist that wrote and sang the song "We Can't Make it Here (Anymore)".]

There are a few songs, amongst them "Hurricane Party" and "Ruby and Carlos" that you can't turn away from. If you're a fan of roots rock/country/Americana/folk, you'll be blown away. But the song that steals the set is called "Cheney's Toy", about our soldiers in Iraq. He held a contest for a 'make-your-own video' for the song, and this is the one that really caught my attention:

Very powerful stuff.

since you asked... (Bwana - 4/27/2008 5:26:14 PM)
finished up my run in "South Pacific" last night, and preparing for a knee scope on wednesday.
