Hartke gateAs of April 11, Anita Hartke of Culpeper is officially the Democratic nominee in the 7th; set to take on GOP goldenboy, Rep. Eric Cantor.

Anita Hartke knows Washington. Her dad, the late Sen. Vance Hartke (D-IN), served 18 years in the Senate. He was one of the most vocal critics of the Vietnam War, served as Chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee, and ran for President in 1972.

young AnitaThe fact that Anita grew up around grass-roots politics made her a natural fit to lead the Democrats in Culpeper County these past few years. In fact her dad was a Dem County Chair in Southern Indiana before holding elected office.

Actually, Anita Hartke has something in common with Barack Obama. While Dick Cheney and Sen. Obama are distant cousins, Anita's mother Martha frequently runs into Lynne Cheney at Senate wives functions. In fact, Mrs. Cheney spoke at a recent breakfast about the Obama and Hartke candidacies.

"This war we're in and the national debt is something we can blame on Eric Cantor. He's been in office eight years, and he's in a position to keep checks and balances on George Bush. He's not doing his job and he is a rubber stamp for George Bush" says Hartke.

Anita Hartke believes in "jobs for every American; healthcare and education for all children; peace and hope for America."

If you missed her recent fundraiser with Howard Dean or just want to meet Anita Hartke, she'll be at the IronHorse Restaurant in Ashland on Wednesday April the 30th to raise some funds. More details here

Congratulations to Anita (Lowell - 4/19/2008 6:28:00 AM)
I met her at the state JJ dinner in February and she's very impressive. Now, the key is getting her the resources she needs to compete against a guy who actually had a sandwich named after him (a "tuna-based stacker" called the "Eric Cantor sandwich") by infamous (now convicted) lobbyist Jack Abramoff.  Go Anita!

I met her at the JJ Dinner too. She and her mother are both super-impressive. (Tom Counts - 4/19/2008 9:22:04 AM)
Actually, I didn't met her during the dinner. It was at the Criegh Deeds reception afterwards around 11 P.M. I think her mother is phenomenal and found her very easy to talk to. It's easy to see from that meeting why Anita is such a classy and well-informed woman. It's hard to know if Cantor has the intelligence to realize what a formidable opponent she is -- or in the unlikely case that he's any more intelligent than, say, George Allen, he must be trying to figure out how to get Carl Rove to help him out. Just a joke about Rove helping out, unless Eric can get some money from some of Abramhoff's GOP Congressional bribe-takers (also a joke).

Go Anita !! We need a great lady like you in Congress.

That would be (Lowell - 4/19/2008 9:24:35 AM)
"Creigh" not "Criegh," "Karl" not "Carl," and "Abramoff" not "Abramhoff" - but besides that, I agree with you.
