From The Washington Post comes the not-unexpected news that Del. Cranwell will step down from his position as Chairman of the Virginia Democratic Party next year.
C. Richard Cranwell, chairman of the Virginia Democratic Party, plans to step aside next year as party leader.

Cranwell, a 30-year fixture in the House of Delegates, said he pledged to former governor Mark R. Warner and current governor Timothy M. Kaine, that he would serve until his term expires in 2009. But he will not run again. - The Washington Post

With the departure this year of Amy Reger as Executive Director of the party, that means that the Virginia Democratic Party will have an largely new leadership team heading into the 2009 state elections (given that Del. Moran, another state party leader, is sure to be focusing on his gubenatorial campaign).

Here's hoping we can give our new team the strength and support that has been the hallmark of the Democratic resurgence under Governors Warner and Kaine.

Turnover is usually pretty high at that level. (Randy Klear - 4/14/2008 3:36:24 PM)
IIRC when Amy Reger replaced Lindsey Reynolds in 2006, Lindsey was the longest-serving state executive director in the country, and she had only had the job for about 5 years. Levar Stoney certainly knows his stuff. I don't see too much of a problem.

Levar is Great (Evan M - 4/14/2008 3:38:50 PM)
I agree, Levar is doing a great job so far. I just thought the change worth noting for us in the blogosphere who maybe haven't been around too long. :)

Replacement? (code - 4/14/2008 5:18:42 PM)
It might be too early to consider, but any bets on who will replace the esteemed Chairman?

Lots of good options there. (Randy Klear - 4/14/2008 6:49:16 PM)
It probably won't be an elected official; they don't really have the time to put into the job. It's more likely to be a senior adviser type, someone like Larry Roberts or Mame Reiley. But those two are just the tip of the iceberg; there are a lot of choices.

I vote for Scott Surovell! n/t (totallynext - 4/15/2008 10:38:29 PM)

I can't think of a better combination than Amy and Levar. Continuation of excellent leadership, high energy and proven ability as well as rapport with other party leaders and volunteers across the state.
