A Non-Annoucement

2005 GOP Attorney General candidate Steve Baril sent out an email this afternoon to people at his law firm, Williams Mullen, announcing that he would not be a candidate for Attorney General in 2009. He said "many friends and supporters" had asked.

Baril said that his first responsibility was to his wife and three children, but that he would "play a leadership role in the 2009 campaign on behalf of Bob McDonnell, Bill Bolling and the nominee for Attorney General."

One the one hand, this is too bad. I was hoping some enterprising GOPer would force Ken Cuccinelli to burn $3 million or so on a nomination fight, the way Baril did with McDonnell in 2005.

On the other, it probably reduces the risk that a less extreme wacko will keep Cooch from the nomination, and thereby make life harder for the Democratic nominee.

Life is full of trade-offs, I guess.
