A Debate in VA-11?

The recent Denneny flap on the GMU debate on April 14 got me thinking, should there be a debate for VA-11 at all?

I actually think we should have a debate with the 4 candidates, albeit not on April 14. What is the harm of having your preferred candidate talk about the issues? I mean, they are going to have to do it against Keith Fimian anyhow, so why not start now, making sure that the candidate the Democrats chose is the best one for the job.

For someone like me, I am not intimately knowledgeable about Leslie or Gerry, or even Doug and Lori for that matter. I for one, would like to see these candidates answer tough questions in person, and not through a blog or a press release.

I would propose two open(public) debates in May. One in Fairfax County, and one in Prince William County. That way, we are not favoring one region over another, and it gives the maximun opportunity for voters to meet the candidates outside of campaign fundraising events. Hell, get basic cable involved! I am sure they wouldn't mind airing the debates.

So I am posting a poll, give me your thoughts!

Denneny more red than purple? (jsrutstein - 4/7/2008 5:37:17 PM)
In addition to Denneny's website still having the press release on the debate that's probably not going to happen next Monday, the latest item on there is Denneny's endorsement by Rep. Gene Taylor of Misssissippi.  For those of you unfamiliar with Rep. Taylor, Denneny would be hard pressed to find a Democrat more conservative than Taylor.

Four debates will be sponsored by the 11th CD Committee (11thCD - 4/8/2008 12:08:05 AM)
The 11th Congressional District Democratic Committee plans to sponsor four debates prior to the June 10th primary featuring all 11th CD Democratic candidates.

One debate will be held on Fairfax TV Channel 10 and one each will be held in the three jurisdictions in the 11th CD -- Fairfax County, Prince William County, and Fairfax City.

The 11th CD Committee receives the petitions gathered by the congressional candidates and then certifies them to the State Board of Elections so the candidates earn a spot on the primary ballot.  So far, two of the candidates -- Byrne and Connolly -- have submitted their petitions and other paperwork to the 11th CD.  The other two candidates have until the April 11 deadline to meet the requirements to be on the ballot.
