Congratulations to Sam Rasoul

With the announcement by Drew Richardson that he is withdrawing from the race in the 6th Congressional District, Sam Rasoul is now the presumptive Democratic nominee to face Rep. Bob Goodlatte in the general election.  I would like to congratulate Sam, who has run an enthusiastic, energetic campaign that has focused on the issues. I wish Sam Rasoul the best of luck against Bob Goodlatte, who is about as "conservative" (defined these days as anti-environment, anti-women, anti-labor, anti-peace, anti-balanced budget, etc.) as you can get.  The only question is, who is worse, Bob Goodlatte, Thelma Drake, Eric Cantor, Virgil Goode, Randy Forbes, Rob Wittman, or Frank Wolf?  Tough choices, I know.  How about let's try to beat 'em all this year? :)

P.S. Drew Richardson's statement is on the "flip." Thanks to Drew for running, I wish him well and hope he stays involved in Democratic politics!

Statement from Drew Richardson

"It has been my privilege to be a candidate for the office of U.S. Congress and to seek the Democratic nomination for that office in our
district. Nevertheless, it has become obvious to me over the last many weeks that my opponent has won the support of a majority of our party's
activists and perhaps had done so prior to my entry into the race.

"If I were to continue with my campaign I have concluded, even if I were to be successful, the win could badly divide our party. I personally
would be left with, at best, merely having won a short-lived victory only to guarantee sure defeat for the party and myself in November.

"For these reasons, as well as to allow my opponent to begin his general election campaign a month or two earlier than he might otherwise have
done, I am suspending my campaign for the  Democratic nomination effective immediately.

"I congratulate the presumptive nominee, Mr. Rasoul, and wish him and his supporters well and good luck over the coming months. Thanks to
those who have encouraged me to enter this race, to those who have supported my efforts and particularly to my campaign staff.

"Finally, a special thank you to all of you for your past, present and continued participation in the political process."

Best Regards,

Drew C. Richardson

Very gracious (kestrel9000 - 4/3/2008 8:20:49 PM)
and noble statement by Dr. Richardson.
Thank you for that, Drew.
I always knew you were okay.

Now....

MACBETH

   I will not yield,
To kiss the ground before young Malcolm's feet,
And to be baited with the rabble's curse.
Though Birnam wood be come to Dunsinane,
And thou opposed, being of no woman born,
Yet I will try the last. Before my body
I throw my warlike shield. Lay on, Macduff,
And damn'd be him that first cries, 'Hold, enough!'

Off we go, Sam!!!!!
Forward, into the breach!!! :)

Uh, don't want to throw cold water on your battle cry (aznew - 4/3/2008 8:27:51 PM)
but how'd things work for old Mac? :)

eep (kestrel9000 - 4/3/2008 8:45:35 PM)
I remembered the "Lay on, Macduff" and went from there..!

Thanks to Drew (Johnny Camacho - 4/3/2008 8:28:09 PM)
The Democratic race could have very easily ended on ugly terms, but Mr. Richardson's decision to withdraw so honorably prevented that from happening. I'm a huge fan of Sam, and I'm thrilled that I'll get to vote for him this November.

Now, lets go make Bob Goodlatte spend some time and money on his re-election bid for a change.

Agreed. (Lowell - 4/3/2008 8:31:44 PM)
Pin Goodlatte down and make him fight for reelection. Better yet, beat him! :)

Why (Politicalhack - 4/3/2008 10:55:23 PM)
is Forbes not on your list of bad Virginia Republicans?

Good question (Ron1 - 4/3/2008 11:01:48 PM)
Frankly, they all suck. The Republican party elected officials have almost all become much, much more extreme than even the most conservative districts. Forbes, Cantor, Goode, and Goodlatte are probably the poster-children of this phenomenon. Wolf, Davis, and Drake are just plain out of step with their districts, but most people just don't have or take the time to pay attention to politics. It's going to take a lot of work to get our fellow Virginians to realize what the people that represent them actually stand, work, and vote for.

Is anyone running against him? (Lowell - 4/4/2008 6:39:44 AM)
n/t

Andrea Miller (Ron1 - 4/4/2008 12:33:14 PM)
See here.

I found this out on ActBlue.

Now is the time (Bubby - 4/4/2008 12:43:27 AM)
For all Democrats and anyone wanting something better than Bush's 6th District Rubber Stamp - Bob Goodlatte... to support Sam Rasoul.

Richardson (martha - 4/4/2008 6:16:49 AM)
When Mr. Richardson becomes fully engaged in the political process he will make a wonderful candidate.

Richardson (JustinG - 4/4/2008 10:41:50 AM)
I kind of wish Richardson had stayed in a while longer. A competative primary probably would end up helping the eventual nominee a lot.  But either way, go Sam!
