Pat Robertson, Al Sharpton, Nancy Pelosi and Newt Gingrich Agree on Something?

It's not too often that you're going to get Pat Robertson and Al Sharpton agreeing on anything. Or how about Nancy Pelosi and Newt Gingrich? Hell will freeze over before that happens, you say? Well, don't look now but it looks like Beelzebub's now sitting on a block of ice!

Former Vice President Al Gore is launching a $300 million, bipartisan campaign to try to push climate change higher on the nation's political agenda.

The three-year campaign by the Alliance for Climate Protection will begin Wednesday with network television advertising that will include "American Idol" and other non-traditional shows that reach a non-news audience.
The debut ad, "Anthem," is posted here.

Pat Robertson and Al Sharpton just filmed an ad for the We Campaign, sitting on a couch on the beach. In the ad, now being produced, they say that while they may not agree on many things, they do agree that they have to work to save the planet.

A future couple in the "strange bedfellows" or "unlikely alliances" spots will be recorded soon: Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

The point here is that global warming is NOT a partisan or ideological issue, it's an issue for everyone who lives on planet Earth.  All of us, in other words.  Now, you can join Pat, Al, Nancy and Newt in helping to solve the planet's climate crisis by clicking here and signing up.  Perhaps more importantly, you can act locally by doing things like insulating your home; buying the most energy efficient appliances and vehicles; carpooling, walking, and biking instead of driving solo whenever possible; planting trees; and of course urging Gov. Kaine to stop new coal-fired power plant development in Virginia.  Hey, if Pat, Al, Nancy and Newt can agree on something, it seems like the rest of us can too. Thanks.

The thing about it is (Ron1 - 3/31/2008 7:59:16 AM)
we know pretty precisely what the scope of the problem is. We need to dramatically slow our emissions of CO2, and eventually become a carbon neutral energy economy. But beyond that, we need to think about trying to reduce atmospheric CO2 levels back down to somewhere approaching where they were before the start of the industrial age -- say, 300 ppm.

This is difficult, but doable, if the political will is there. 8 years of head in the sand and anti-science surely didn't help matters any, but it's not like the Senate as it's currently constructed would go along with any major treaties anyway. We're a long way away from getting the right actors in place to take a major stab at this. Maybe by 2010 or 2012, but the longer we wait the worse it's going to get.

States are going to have to take the lead on this. Lowell, you're absolutely right -- Kaine needs to step up and lead.

Some states ARE taking the lead (Lowell - 3/31/2008 8:20:18 AM)
Kansas, Florida, California, many others.  What about Virginia?  So far, I see a few small things, but then I also see a major new coal-fired power plant that will undo all/most of the gains from all the other things.  That's not acceptable if our goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050 (note: 80% by 2050 means around 40% by 2030, ~20% by 2020, ~10% by 2015, ~5% by 2010...and right now we're on track to INCREASE by 2010, 2015, etc).

First, Happy 60th Al Gore!

We Campaign launched it's new website last night:

And to kick it off, Al Gore was on 60 Minutes

Pat Robertson's people point out that he's not endorsing Al Gore's position on climate change -- only the need to protect the planet from whatever assaults might be out there.

Obama and McCain (S. Becker - 3/31/2008 11:10:53 AM)
How powerful would an ad be with Barack Obama and John McCain together, side-by-side, talking about climate change?

I think once Hillary calls it quits, this could definitely be done, and be something that would not hurt either of the candidates's campaign.

Another noble effort by Mr. Gore . . . (AnOrangeDem - 3/31/2008 12:52:52 PM)
. . . but I must confess my first thought after reading the piece was that if God answered my prayers, He would have sent a mighty wave crashing onto the beach during the Robertson/Sharpton ad shoot, therefore washing both of those blowhards out to sea

Am I going to hell?
